Kindle Touch online games killer sudoku futoshiki and more

Online games with your Kindle Touch -- free, of course!

Lately I seem to be turning my Kindle Touch into a game machine!
It turns out some of the best puzzle sites have games that can be played
directly on the Kindle (and also on "flashless" android phones and other
devices.) These include Brainbashers.com, PuzzleBaron, and KrazyDad
now has online Killer Sudoku. Below are the results of my tests of the
games on these sites -- what works, and what doesn't work.

Brainbashers http://www.brainbashers.com/puzzles.asp
(if you enter at the main page, look for the 'puzzles' tab.) Almost all
the daily 'Japanese' logic puzzles work. Most of the word games do NOT
work on the Kindle Touch. But there are a couple of notable exceptions
(drop quotes and cryptograms).

You will need to practice with pinching and zooming and shoving the
larger puzzles around the screen, especially with the killer sudoku or
sudoku. After a bit you can develop a somewhat delicate deft touch.
At times, you can leave the keyboard up, and simply pinch and shove the
visible part of the puzzle without removing the keyboard. I recommend
starting with smaller puzzles like futoshiki or skyscrapers, or tents. Try
using your little finger to enter items, rather than an index finger.

Sudoku and Killer Sudoku -- Pencil marks are entered by typing a
second number in the cell. There is an auto pencil option that is useful
in Sudoku -- it is just above the undo button, if it doesn't show.
Tapping in a blank area of the screen will take the keyboard down. Be
careful you don't hit one of the links around the puzzle -- if you leave the
page, you will have to start over. With puzzles as complex as Killers, I
keep a quick graph of my 'finds' in case I 'lose' the puzzle. With a little
experience, this isn't a problem anymore. It also seems if you don't
finish, the puzzle will be 'saved' in your browser, if you simply turn off
the Kindle (or return to main menu) without leaving the puzzle page. To
my surprise, after having 'quit', when I got home, I found the puzzle
came up when I logged in again!

Also working on the Brainbashers site:
Futoshiki, kakuro (do NOT use the 'old version'), hitori slithlerlink,
nonogrid, slant, daily range, kakurasu, tents, netslide, network,
skyscrapers (towers), abc path, filomino, calcudoku (kenken), lightup,
mathematics.

Also: logic puzzles -- The Daily logic puzzle has a fill-in grid like the
Kindle Grid Detective game.

Word games: Drop Quotes is a nice surprise, and Cryptograms also
work. But see the cryptograms at Puzzle Baron (below).

Not working: bridges (no line), rectangles, codewords, most of the other
word games.

PuzzleBaron http://www.cryptograms.org/puzzles.php
Puzzlebaron is a collection of sites -- each puzzle type has its own
site. Puzzles that work on the Kindle Touch:

Cryptograms - longer cryptograms with shorter lines than at Brainbashers
fit the Kindle screen better. A nice interface with highlighted letters and
letter frequencies.

Dropquotes (same as Brainbashers), logic puzzle, clueless crossword
(codewords!), mixups

Word Twist (choose 'old version' - this is nonflash. A little slow on the KT.

Acrostics -- this is a sad one. It works fine and is very doable,
except a vertical ad banner pops across part of the puzzle.

Sudoku -- works but no auto pencils, so I prefer Brainbashers.

Not working - hangman (same ad problem as acrostics), patchwords,
boxtrot (tetris).

Krazydad's online killer sudoku: http://krazydad.com/killersudoku/
Look for the 'try the online version' link in the middle of the page.
These killers fit the Kindle screen almost exactly. No keyboard and
not much pinching/zooming is needed. It seems a 'mobile' version
is fed to the kindle. Use the line of numbers below the board for
input. The little 'm' to the side switches into pencil mark mode.
Touch a number, then a cell to enter it. (If you try these on the PC,
the shift key enters pencil marks.)

Why some sites don't work: I found a number of 'almost sites' where
the puzzle rendered properly, but the keyboard wouldn't come up. This
problem is not specific to Kindle -- it happens on the android, too. The
page is just not set to touch (yet!). Hopefully they will join the
touch world. My favorite -- killersudokuonline.com is one such.

In other cases -- if the input requires drag and drop, like a lot of
word games or solitaires, or hashi (bridges), it won't work on the
Kindle Touch. Very fast games are also not good -- like most
arcade games or tetris. The screen can't keep up.
