Friends...

Just got my first friend request on this forum... and typically on any forum I just ignore them... but decided I finally should ask...

In this context what does granting a "friend" request mean?

You show up on their profile as a friend, they show up on yours?

That's all I've seen. Like bookmarking a member. I guess add to contacts would work the same way.

I don't really know what the purpose is other than a quick link on your profile page to people you have common interests with. I have three friends:

One shares a desire to read some classics we should have read in high school.
One shares a love of music (especially shiny things with string).
One shares a love of animated movies.

I don't have friends on other forums. Maybe it's just the kind of community we have here.

You can also use it (or rather, the related "Contacts" bit) to refine some of your personal options as they relate to Private Messaging and Visitor Messaging. Under the Edit Options section of your User CP is the ability to restrict PMs and VMs to "Contacts and Moderators".
