Greetings,

I'm trying to get telnet access to my Kindle2. I can enable USB network and ping
the kindle2 (192.168.15.244). After applying the manual update using "update_usbnetwork-k2.bin" (and verifying the "Done"), I still am unable to
connect to the Kindle2. In fact, the IP address does not change from the default (192.168.25.244) value. It looks like the usb startup script is not being invoked.
My kindle2 is running 2.0.2.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

usbnetwork 0.07 ; now with uninstaller

Hi there.

I created an uninstaller for the usbnetwork package ; because cleaning up and removing everything it created was a tad complicated...

Available there:
http://www.avenard.org/kindle2/usbnetwork-0.7.tar.gz

Thanks!

BTW, has anyone been able to enable USB networking on the KindleDX running 2.1.1?

Sorry, I've seem to have gotten into the habit of answering my own questions.

However, I'd like to confirm that jyavenard's usbnetwork 0.07 does indeed work on a KindleDX running 2.1.1.

I'm trying to SSH into my Kindle International to change the time zone (it won't move off of GMT). I've installed USBNetwork 0.07, and received the confirmation log file in the root directory, however, no other folders are showing up.

I've tried entering the debug mode, and turning on USB networking, but the Kindle is still being recognized as a mass storage device (I'm using a Mac running Snow Leopard).

I've read something about adding an AUTO file into a certain directory. The directory doesn't yet exist on the Kindle, and I have no clue what this AUTO file is (and unfortunately, no information is given).

I'm not a noob to hacking and stuff, but also don't know a ton about command line and Linux (I have hacked my Kindle and iPhone though, and created custom font packages for the Kindle International, so can usually follow instructions well).

Thanks to anyone who can help me out!

I PM'd you, but just create a file called "AUTO" in the usbnet directory.
It can be "auto" or "AUTO" as the filesystem is case-insensitive.

(The start-up script tests for the existence of this file and starts the
networking accordingly).

Cheers.

Guys

I'm very happily running the USB networking on my DX and everything is good. I'd like to change my screensaver pictures.

Before I try, can someone advise if the Screensaver Hack will uninstall the USB networking - or do they play nice together?

Many Thanks

Answered my own question - on 2.1 they do play nice.

There's a software update for the Kindle

Anyone know if this software update breaks the USB networking?
Often software updates are done in such a way that they can't be reverted, so it would be good to know if this is one of them.

Having native pdf support in the Kindle2 would be nice, but I want the USB networking too.

Updated the packages for Firmware 2.3 for DX and K2
http://www.avenard.org/kindle2/usbnetwork23-0.9.tar.gz

They are identical to 0.7 ; just repackaged to bypass the new security ..

Edit: Use 0.9 if you have updated to 2.3
Use 0.7 if you are running an earlier firmware

Great! Thanks!
I'm just waiting for this before updating my DX. Now I can install the 2.3 update without lossing all the fun stuff usbNetwork enables us to do.

Hi,

the uninstaller does not seem to work properly on my DX. I can't update to 2.3 and my guess is do to a still existing symbolic link. I tried the uninstaller several times.

Everytime it says:
usbnetwork v0.07, Thu Jan 1 00:54:48 UTC 1970
symbolic link /etc/rcS.d/S72usbnet exists, deleting...
Done!

So the symbolic link remains.

Is there a way to remove this link manually. (While everything else got deleted by the uninstaller?)

Otherwise I won't be able to update to 2.3

I don't think the Update procedure checks for new files. AFAIK it only checks if the patches are successfully applied. It is doing this by checking MD5 sum.

I think you should look for cause of you upgrade problems somewhere else.

Greetings

Still having that link won't prevent you to update to 2.3 ; in fact you could update to 2.3 with the usbnetwork hack still installed. The usbnetwork stuff only adds files; it doesn't modify any existing file.

If you want to remove the link manually; telnet or ssh to your kindle and do:
rm -f /etc/rcS.d/S72usbnet (which is what the uninstaller does)

Edit: You're right ; there's a bug, the symbolic link is never deleted ... Will update right away...
Here it is:
http://www.avenard.org/kindle2/usbnetwork23-0.9.tar.gz

Will properly delete the symbolic link (not that it mattered much anyway)

Edit: 0.9 is only for Kindle firmware 2.3.
Use 0.7 if using an earlier version
