OverDrive DRM-free eBooks Now Available to Libraries

DRM-free eBooks are now available to libraries

Quote:
For the past few months, OverDrive has been beta testing DRM-free eBook distribution in libraries. Today, we’re excited to announce that all OverDrive-powered libraries can now add DRM-free eBooks to their digital collections.

>> snip <<

All DRM-free eBooks are available under the one-copy/one-user model, which means you can add a copy to your collection and one user at a time can borrow the title from the library. Just like all other OverDrive-supplied content, the titles will be borrowed for a set amount of time and when that lending period is up, another user can check out the title.
A list of publishers providing DRM-free content is in the article.

Wonder if there's going to be any kind of a list of libraries with such availability.

I just did a search at Philadelphia library and they have 116 DRM free epubs and 8 DRM free PDFs. All the PDFs also have an epub version.

Why do you even need to return DRM free ebooks? Is there still a waiting list for these? Still sounds like DRM to me.

Philadelphia Library also has something else that I hadn't noticed before; They recently added a bunch of travel (I think) ADE epubs, and under "Available Copies" and "Library Copies", it says "Always Available".

Need to return the ebooks early :
So others can have access to them.
To open the option for you to check out another book.

The fact that there's no 'return early' capability is a consequence of there being no DRM, since this is a feature of ADE/RMSDK that only applies to DRMed content. Overdrive has never provided this feature on the library portal itself (though it would be nice if they did).

I'm curious about the language used to motivate people to respect licensing terms, if there will be email sent to remind people to delete the content, etc.

It's only a 'problem' insofar as you may pick a lending period that turns out to be much longer than it takes to actually read the book, denying the opportunity for another patron to borrow the book. I assume one still has the usual 7/14/21 day checkouts provided by the library. A reasonable mitigation might be to disallow 21 day checkouts for non-DRM ebooks (if they're normally provided by the library).

It sure smells like (quiet) watermarking, doesn't it?

This is a pleasant surprise. Though the list of publishers taking part isn't too surprising.
