Ainsworth, William Harrison: The Lancashire Witches:. v1, 4 Feb 2008
From Amazon.com:
Ainsworth's last masterpiece, The Lancashire Witches proved a best-seller in its day and influenced many contemporary authors. The Lancashire Witches begins in the 16th century, in Lancashire, England. When a Cistercian monk, Borlace Alvetham, is falsely accused of witchcraft and condemned to death by his rival, Brother Paslew, he sells his soul to Satan and escapes. Years later, granted the powers of a warlock, he returns in the guise of Nicholas Demdike to witness Paslew's execution for treason. Dying, Paslew curses Demdike's offspring -- who become the titular "Lancashire Witches." The rest of the book set in the 17th century. Mother Demdike, a powerful witch, and her clan face rival witches, raise innocent young Alizon Devi as their own, and try to corrupt Alizon despite her innocent ways. Ultimately, the book becomes a struggle between Heaven and Hell, with Alizon's fate hanging in the balance. Illustrated by John Gilbert. Very nice book!
That's the nice thing about e-books: it gives you the opportunity to read books you would never read otherwise... a very nice thing One minor remark: the cover image is quite small on my Cybook. Is it the same on a PRS50x? In my opinion it would be nice to have a full size cover image, but I don't know if you would like it? |

Ooo, local books for local people! I live about five minutes walk from Lancaster Castle, where those very witches were... er...
Oh, don't want to give the plot away. It's probably just a novel to most of you, whereas it's a Well Known Historical Event round here |

My Mom's maiden name was Ainsworth, but we've never done anything to try and track ancestry. There are at couple that were writers 'long ago and far away'.
