Apple is already fighting Amazon in the ebook price wars (with aggressive discounts)

http://paidcontent.org/2012/09/11/ap...ok-price-wars/

Quote:
Apple didn’t want to compete with Amazon on ebook prices. But it is already showing that it is more than willing to do so. And if customers are drawn to Apple’s new low prices on ebooks, it’s possible to envision the company’s ebook market share rising.

We saw yesterday that HarperCollins has already entered into new contracts with ebook retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google. Now Apple has a new deal with HarperCollins too.

Amazon is already dropping its ebook prices to match Apple’s, in the cases where Apple had priced a book lower than Amazon did. For instance, James Rollin’s Bloodlines and J.A. Jance’s Judgment Call were each $10.94 in the Kindle Store this morning and $9.99 in iTunes. Just a few hours later, both books are down to $9.99 at Amazon as well.

Ebook price drops begin — and Apple is discounting, too

Quote:
Based just on the titles above, the average price on Amazon Kindle was $8.43; on Apple, $9.81; on Barnes & Noble Nook, $9.57; on Google Play, $9.91; on Sony (SNE), $10.42; on Kobo, $12.25.

Amazon's been working its way gradually through the HC catalog, dropping prices. HC stuff I've been watching the prices for, the prices have been dropping, one at a time.

Until I can read iBooks on something other than an iOS device, it doesn't matter how low the price is. I'll stick with Amazon as I can read whatever I purchase on just about anything.

Yep.. I've got exactly *1* book from iBooks and don't ever intend to purchase another.

Content price wars only rank highly on my radar when the content is easily playable on the device of my choosing. This essentially means a DRM-free, common file standard. (Having to strip the DRM & convert it myself takes the "ease" out of it for me.)

Since this is rarely the case, that's when many other factors come into it for me. Initial buy-in for a device. Is the new device compatible with my existing files? Does that device meet a sufficient amount of my needs/wants? How's customer service? Etc, Etc.

It's part of why I've always been a little leery of the whole content provider/hardware seller configuration. It seems to be where the industry is going, I know. I just prefer more division.

I was going to cite automobiles/gas as an example, but I think the case of someone like Sony is somewhat more apropos. A Sony CD player doesn't just play Sony music. It plays just about any CD from any label. (Never used a Sony ereader, so I don't know how much they carry that model into that arena.)

Instead they seem to be using the razor blade model. Sell them a razor cheap then charge $$ for the special blades needed to fit it.

Sony did that with the memory stick.

Sony started out with a proprietary format for their ereaders in the early days, but several years ago, they switched to the industry standard Adobe Digital Editions EPUB. B&N supports ADE EPUB, but uses their own proprietary DRM for books purchased from them (although my understanding is that they are working with Adobe to include their DRM in the standard). My understanding is that Sony has one of the best ADE implementations out there.

This would be funny except it is too sad and not to mention, infuriating to Aussies.

Yeah, basically I would think an ever increasing proportion of Australians will :

1) Buy the US edition - so Europeans lose to the competitor they are most worried about losing to short-term

2) Buy other stuff that are not by any of the price fixing gougers thus lose long-term
