As an FYI, while the magazines show up as POBI on an eink Kindle, if you go to Manage Your Kindle and choose the option to download and transfer via USB, you get an AZW3. The only disadvantage is that the covers of at least some of the magazines are in B/W although Kindle apps for phone/tablet have color covers.

Dell magazines direct digital sales

If Dell is having problems setting up direct sales they should ask Apex Magazine, a much smaller publisher, how they are able to do direct sales. Of they could work a deal with Baen Books, who have been direct selling digital content for years.

I've decided to give a Kobo subscription a go, since it's marginally cheaper per year.

Cancelling my Amazon sub reveals an unfortunate feature of subscribing through Amazon - when the subscription is cancelled, access to previous issues is lost!

I do, of course, have them all downloaded and in calibre. But it's not good that stopping a subscription removes access to older issues.

I was wrong! Completely wrong!

I failed to look at 'inactive subscriptions'! There are my subs, with the old issues available.

And I've given up on Kobo. After checking again, it doesn't seem possible to download the issues in a way that allows the DRM to be removed. I've restarted my Amazon subs.

I'm once again pondering a move. Now that Analog and Asimov's are only six issues a year, I notice that the Google Play bookstore is still offering the individual back issues at £2.30 each, and the current issue at £2.69. I'm perfectly willing to read an issue behind for a saving of £1.68 off the Amazon price of £3.98 (when subscribed).

But I suspect that Google will notice this pricing discrepancy and fix it soon.

Has anyone got issues from the Google Play Store? Do they have DRM? If they do, is it the usual ADE 2.0.1 DRM?

IIRC Google magazines use their Newsstand app (as opposed to Books) and are only usable in that app and online. I don't think there is a way to do a separate download.

Looks like you can do a trial subscription to see though, at least US customers can.

I've just noticed that Amazon are offering the current issue for just £2.49. The next issue is due out sometime this month, but I've already paid the subscription fee for that. But if that also shows an individual price of £2.49, I'll be cancelling my subscription before the next fee becomes due. £2.49, paying using No-Rush shipping credits is a lot better than £3.98 paid from my bank account!

Hi,

I was seriously considering subscribing to Asimov's SF magazine, mainly to have something new to read on my KOBO during my daily bus travels, but looking at this thread it seems barely possible to actually put this magazine on kobo devices. Especially when you are not in US or UK.

May someone confirm it is still not possible to easily read this magazine on kobo devices ? (of course, after buying a legit subscription on any serious website).

Thanks !

This thread is quite old, so it's possible things have changed.

I'd suggest buying a test issue. Or subscribe and cancel within the free trial period if you can't get it to work.

I'm still buying individual issues from Amazon UK.

I'm going to give a try on amazon.com then, thanks !

What are you using to read your issues btw? A reader or just PC/smartphone app? Because if I cannot read it properly on a reader I think that I'll just subscribe to the paper format.

I read on a Kindle, so that's not a problem. As I do have a Kindle, I'm also able to easily remove the DRM if I wanted to read it on some other device.

You may have more problems, unless your eReader can run a Kindle app, as you'll need to remove the DRM, and I don't think the magazines will download to Kindle for PC/Mac.

They have indeed changed, but just very recently in the past 1-3 weeks. You can now buy Analog and Asimov's magazine issues in epub directly from Penny Publications. No DRM! Link to digital editions on their respective web pages.

I have subscribed to both in the past few days and am very happily reading the current issue of Analog, a magazine that I first started reading mumble decades ago and which I had to stop subscribing to the print edition due to eyesight issues a decade ago. I have been trying to get both of these magazines on my Kobo since then without success until now.

Amazon say that Analog and Asimov's are available through Kindle Unlimited.

Can someone with Kindle Unlimited say whether back issues are available, and is so, how far back they go?
