A more descriptive subject line would be helpful.

If you're on Linux, how did you install Calibre, and what version are you running? If you used your distribution's repository this may be the cause of your problems, try installing the latest version from the Calibre website.

What Idolse said.

The number of people who are going to click on a thread entitled "A Problem" (and actually be able to help you) is much smaller than those who would read and respond to a thread entitled "Calibre giving Python errors and failing to start in Linux".

Report your own own post (the little ! to your left) and tell the moderators via that text box what you want the thread renamed to. They're happy to have a "report" that's really just for a renaming instead of a persistent troll.

No, that only changed the title of the first post, not the title of the thread.

Without calibre running, open the Opus in your file manager and see if there is a file called metadata.calibre or something similar. Delete it, and start calibre.

Does calibre run without your device hooked up?

yes, I have already tried converting books without having the reader connected

I would actually be happy also if I could find the 0.7.38. version, it worked fine for me...the problem came as I upgraded to 0.7.42....or the problem is my upgrade to 11.04 ubuntu...

Does calibre open for you? If yes, what errors do you see when you try to convert?

Here is a link to available previous versions.

This is possible. You might want to remove all traces of calibre from your system (except the library) then reinstall using the binary install described here.

Code:
sudo python -c "import urllib2; exec urllib2.urlopen('http://status.calibre-ebook.com/linux_installer').read(); main()"
Good Luck.
