Traditional paper book:

* Summary blurb
* Typeface (or font? I am picky about how legible the letters are.)
* Random selection of several consecutive paragraphs in the middle of the book, two or three spots

Ebook:

* Summary blurb
* Random comments and reviews from MobileRead, Amazon and Goodreads, when available
* Random sampling (I usually have to go to the hardcover page in Amazon to get the sample, if available)

I've never downloaded a Kindle sample because I've been assuming they are the beginning of the book and I don't want that. I often don't like the way a book starts so I find a sample from the middle is better. I love that I can pick random pages to sample in Smashwords.

Cover, blurb, price. Maybe it's cheating but 'cover' tells me author, title and usually suggests genre.
