Kempen, Thomas von: Nachfolge Christi [German] V1., 25 Apr 2010

Thomas von Kempen, lat. Thomas a Kempis (* um 1380 in Kempen als Thomas Hemerken [Hämmerlein]; † 25. Juli 1471 im Kloster Windesheim bei Zwolle, Niederlande) war ein Augustiner-Chorherr und Mystiker des 15. Jahrhunderts. 1399 fand er Aufnahme in das Haus der Brüder vom gemeinsamen Leben und lebte dort 72 Jahre lang, bis zu seinem Tode. Von ihm verfasst wurde das nach der Bibel meistverbreitete Buch des Spätmittelalters, die Nachfolge Christi (De imitatione Christi), wobei jedoch die Autorschaft lange umstritten war.

Das Hauptwerk Thomas von Kempens, "De Imitatione Christi - Von der Nachfolge Christi", ist neben der Bibel das meistverbreitete Buch aller Zeiten. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert bis heute sind zahllose Ausgaben in nahezu allen Kultursprachen der Welt erschienen, allein in deutscher Sprache sollen es 3500-4000 Ausgaben sein.

Die "Nachfolge Christi" hat ihren Titel von der Überschrift des ersten ihrer vier Bücher. Der Urtext ist im Versmaß und in Reimen abgefasst. Das Werk ist in vier Bücher gegliedert. Buch I leitet Anfänger zum christlichen Leben an. Buch II handelt von Demut, Friedfertigkeit, Einfalt und Leidensbereitschaft. Buch IV gibt eucharistische Betrachtungen und Gebete. Buch III, das umfangreichste, beleuchtet den Trost, den der Christ durch den Umgang mit Christus empfängt.
