Installation

Two things happened at about the same time on my computer.

I first installed a version of Calibre that switched from having a single library1.db file.

I upgraded my ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite from version 7 to version 8.

Every time I upgrade Calibre since the first time it converted my library1.db to separate files, it takes over an hour for the full installation routine to run!

I upgraded to 0.4.111 today. It took 66 minutes.

At first I thought it was because the installation kept finding my old library1.db file, and trying to convert it. But I zipped that up a full day before I reinstalled Calibre this last time.

Has anyone else notice their installation time increase? If so, are you also using ZoneAlarm?

The only other thing I could hazard a guess at is ZoneAlarm - that it's reviewing each of the executable files (and maybe dlls) before it's allowing them to be saved to the hard-drive.

It does tend to mean I only upgrade about once every 10 or so iterations of the software...

Have you tried disabling ZoneAlarm before installing Calibre?

Also, I suggest you check your hard disk for errors - it could be you have some bad segments and Windows is choking when it tries to access them. Right click the drive (in Explorer etc), select Properties, Tools, Error-checking (this is in XP). Warning - this will take some time, and Windows may need to reboot and perform the check as it starts up.

Not yet. Up until this last install, I thought it was because Calibre was still trying to convert my 500+ book library1.db file to the separate files (that had already been done).

Since the library1.db was removed, I now know it's not that.

So until there's another Calibre upgrade, I'm just trying to gather some information!

All the installer does is unzip and copy files to the disk and add a few registry keys, so it is most likely zonealarm that's causing the slowdown. The installer certainly doesn't try to migrate library1.db that happens when you run the GUI

Well, I cautiously disconnected my internet connection and shut down ZoneAlarm.

Installation of 0.4.112 took ... oh ... about 90 seconds.

What a pain in the tookhes!
