US selection: The Giver by Lois Lowry

Quote:
Winner of the 1994 Newbery Medal, this thought-provoking novel centers on a 12-year-old boy's gradual disillusionment with an outwardly utopian futuristic society; in a starred review, PW said, "Lowry is once again in top form... unwinding a tale fit for the most adventurous readers." Ages 10-up.

(this was a Daily Deal once, some of you might already have it)

For whatever reason, Amazon has already price matched, but Google hasn't updated yet for me and a search doesn't bring up this book (maybe this isn't available via Google in Canada?). I'll check back later and add the link if it shows up.

The $0.25 offering for me in Canada from Google is Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose The Weight, And Find Your Path Back To Health by William Davis. Fortunately The Giver is available to me on Amazon, so I bought it.

I saw a post on Amazon UK's Discussion board that said the Google Play of the Day there is Rules of the Game by Neil Strauss.

Maybe the diet book isn't so bad. The pick up book is not pricematched yet on Amazon, but here's the link if you're game.

Today's Australian selection is Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood

Quote:
Meet the Hon. Phryne Fisher - gorgeous, charming and terribly fashionable. Tiring of the tedium of English high society she sets out for Melbourne, Australia to start a new life as a lady detecive along the way encountering more than her fair share of corrupt cops, communism and cocaine smugglers. Introducing Australia's most elegant and irrepressible sleuth. The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honourable Phryne Fisher - she of the green-grey eyes, diamant garters and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositions - is rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men. Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia. Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops and communism - not to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse - until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

I read that book in seventh grade. I remember it being kinda interesting but I don't know if I'd want to re-read.
