Size Test

Okay, so, this is weird. Maybe I'm not doing it right.

Attached are 7 files
Size Test.zip - my full-fledged source.
Size Test - Brewt.mobi - the calibre-rendered mobi
Size Test - Brewt.epub - the calibre-rendered epub
Indesign Size.epub – Indesign rendered epub
Indesign Size.mobi – Indesign rendered mobi
Size test – unscaled.epub – caliber-rendered epub, Disable Font size rescaling checked
Size test – unscaled.mobi – caliber-rendered mobi, Disable Font size rescaling checked

Unzip my zip files to see what I did. Built in word, massaged in Dreamweaver, applied css-tidy. All type sizes based on “em”’s.

So, when looking at the various files, obvious differences on the gradations become apparent, at least to me.

Source in Browser:
Size differences happen every 0.1 em

Size Test - Brewt.epub in ADE & Calibre Viewer:
Size changes happen at 0.1-0.5 em, 0.6 em, 0.7-0.9 em, 1.0 em, 1.1-1.2 em, 1.3-1.5 em, 1.6-1.7 em, 1.8-1.9 em, 2.0 em.

When I look at the css rendered by Calibre, the font sizes are as follows with “Disable Font Size Recaling” unchecked:

Style 1: font-size: 0.58333em;
Style 2: font-size: 0.75em;
Style 3: font-size: 1em;
Style 4: font-size: 1.125em;
Style 5: font-size: 1.41667em;
Style 6: font-size: 1.66667em;
Style 7: font-size: 1.83333em;
Style 8: font-size: 2em;

When I build the same-ish file out of indesign (slightly different because the source file is a docx file, not an xhtml file) the epub has size gradations at 0.1 em. – well, close. According to the indesign-rendered css the fonts sizes are as follows:

Style 1: font-size: 0.08em;
Style 2: font-size: 0.21em;
Style 3: font-size: 0.29em;
Style 4: font-size: 0.42em;
Style 5: font-size: 0.50em;
Style 6: font-size: 0.58em;
Style 7: font-size: 0.71em;
Style 8: font-size: 0.79em;
Style 9: font-size: 0.92em;
Style 10: font-size: 1.00em;
Style 11: font-size: 1.08em;
Style 12: font-size: 1.21em;
Style 13: font-size: 1.29em;
Style 14: font-size: 1.42em;
Style 15: font-size: 1.50em;
Style 16: font-size: 1.58em;
Style 17: font-size: 1.71em;
Style 18: font-size: 1.79em;
Style 19: font-size: 1.92em;
Style 20: font-size: 2.00em;

The "error" is due to a rounding error between Word and Indesign

The indesign-rendered mobi file has gradations at:
0.1-0.7 em, 0.8 em, 0.9-1.0 em, 1.1-1.3 em, 1.4-1.7 em, 1.8 em, 1.9 em, 2.0 em

So, obviously, the rendering engines are try to help us here, and sure enough, if “Disable Font Size Rescaling” is checked in calibre, the output epub is right on the money, to the 0.1 em gradation. The caliber-rendered mobi file with Disable Font Size Rescaling checked still seems to be scale-assisted – I may not care about it.

I didn't think I could see a significant difference between the indesign epub and the calibre-size-unscaled epubs, but have attached them anyway. Sure, over long courses of text, a .01 em variant in body copy size will make a difference in how many page turns a user has to go through to get from beginning to end, regardless of the size they actually pick to read at (does anyone actually use XXL?) but again, I may not care...

Hey, I answered my own question!
