The only president to hold a PhD was Woodrow Wilson. However, Barack Obama will be the second president to have a doctorate degree, since he has a JD. |

JD is a Juris Doctor ... a doctorate of laws. Do not confuse that with being a "lawyer." The two things are NOT the same. A doctorate of laws means that you have completed law school. Being a lawyer means that you have passed the bar exam in some jurisdiction. A person can be a lawyer and not have a JD (in which case they have "read for the bar" and passed the bar exam), or they can have a JD and not have passed the bar in any jurisdiction. I do not know if Barack Obama passed the bar anywhere. I do know that he has a JD. Abraham Lincoln was a good example of someone who was a lawyer, but who did not have a JD. |

It is amusing that Bush got his MBA at Harvard as did Obama his JD.

trick question:
Barack Obama will be our 44th President. How many men have been President of the United Staes before him? Last edited by pshrynk; 11-06-2008 at 10:33 AM. Reason: 'Cause nate has a trickier mind that me. :) |

Well, that wasn't actually the trick I was thinking of. Have to be aware of that the next time I ask that question.

Are you referring to the fact that Mr. Cleveland was elected twice (with Mr. Harrison in between), hence the 43 previous presidents only comprise 42 separate men, since Mr. Cleveland occupies both numbers 22 and 24?

Who was the only person to run for President, come in first in the popular vote and first in the Electoral vote, and still lose the election?
