One of today's Kindle Daily Deals is Lev Grossman's The Magician King, the second in his Magicians trilogy, for $2.99. The first book in the series isn't mentioned as part of the deal, but it's also $2.99. The just-released third in the trilogy is not on sale; its regular price is $11.99.

At the time of posting both books have been price-matched at Kobo, and The Magician King has been price-matched at B&N.

Oh, and today's main Daily Deal is the first 22 of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter urban fantasies for $2.99 each. You can get to a full list from Amazon's Gold Box: http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/.

Death Warmed Over, which appears to be 1st in the Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I. series by science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson (whom you may remember from quite a few Star Wars tie-in novels as well as frequent features in various periodic sfnal bundle deals), is free courtesy of publisher Kensington, who've previously given us a freebie tie-in novella some years ago.

This is probably just until the end of Sunday, since Kensington usually doesn't extend their freebies past the weekend.

Free @ Amazon (available to Canadians).

Single Dead Detective Seeks Clue

Ever since the Big Uneasy unleashed vampires, werewolves, and other undead denizens on the world, it's been hell being a detective--especially for zombie P.I. Dan Chambeaux. Taking on the creepiest of cases in the Unnatural Quarter with a human lawyer for a partner and a ghost for a girlfriend, Chambeaux redefines "dead on arrival." But just because he was murdered doesn't mean he'd leave his clients in the lurch. Besides, zombies are so good at lurching.

Now he's back from the dead and back in business--with a caseload that's downright unnatural. A resurrected mummy is suing the museum that put him on display. Two witches, victims of a curse gone terribly wrong, seek restitution from a publisher for not using "spell check" on its magical tomes. And he's got to figure out a very personal question--Who killed him?

For Dan Chambeaux, it's all in a day's work. (Still, does everybody have to call him "Shamble"?) Funny, fresh, and irresistible, this cadaverous caper puts the P.I. in R.I.P. . ..with a vengeance.

The Lord of Opium by Nancy Farmer [Simon & Schuster] is $1.99 at your favorite retailer.
Quote:
As the teenage ruler of his own country, Matt must cope with clones and cartels in this riveting sequel to the modern classic House of the Scorpion, winner of the National Book Award, a Newbery Honor, and a Printz Honor.

Matt has always been nothing but a clone—grown from a strip of old El Patron’s skin. Now, at age fourteen, he finds himself suddenly thrust into the position of ruling over his own country. The Land of Opium is the largest territory of the Dope Confederacy, which ranges on the map like an intestine from the ruins of San Diego to the ruins of Matamoros. But while Opium thrives, the rest of the world has been devastated by ecological disaster—and hidden in Opium is the cure.

And that isn’t all that awaits within the depths of Opium. Matt is haunted by the ubiquitous army of eejits, zombielike workers harnessed to the old El Patron’s sinister system of drug growing—people stripped of the very qualities that once made them human.

Matt wants to use his newfound power to help, to stop the suffering, but he can’t even find a way to smuggle his childhood love, Maria, across the border and into Opium. Instead, his every move hits a roadblock, some from the enemies that surround him…and some from a voice within himself. For who is Matt really, but the clone of an evil, murderous dictator?

I'm glad you posted this, that sounds so hilarious. I grabbed it yesterday, but it's still showing as free, at Amazon US at least, for anyone who didn't see it Sunday!

Thanks for the tip ... but could you add a link when posting (store of your choice) for those on mobile, where searching is more difficult?

There is Hope
By Victoria Rasmus

Quote:
SYNOPSIS

"Remember," they say, "that the darkest hour of all, is the hour before day." Life was peaceful once, and then they came. Hideous creatures from beyond our solar system, with power and technology far beyond what our imaginations could conceive, and they want our resources. It just so happens that the resources they want are us…humans. With war on the horizon, invasion within sight, what could possibly be done to save humanity? Can humanity be saved?
Kobo $3.49 but the coupon 'perkopolis' works so it's just $2.09

A Freebie (4 days) that I have read and recommend (series from a author I follow)

Comet Fall (Wine of the Gods Book 6) by Pam Uphoff

Book Six in the Wine of the Gods Universe

A thousand years ago the gods said a comet had fallen. Nearly everyone had died.

Now a small one is going to hit in six months . . . and a planet killer in eight years.

The young witches and wizards of Ash have a lot to learn, and a lot of growing up to do.Rustle Neverdaut is going to be a powerful witch, if she survives bullies, high society, rapists and her own greatgrandmother.

http://www.amazon.ca/Comet-Fall-Wine...dp/B009RYGE1E/

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Comet-Fall-W...dp/B009RYGE1E/

The typos may put some off - the later books are much better because I and other readers have been proofreading and typospotting !
