Can't update your Kindle to firmware 2.3 ? Read on...

Here is a short checklist for people wishing to update to firmware 2.3 ; but for some reasons it failed

-You have installed some hacks :

Make sure you've uninstalled them, usually a package came with its uninstaller.

Savory:
http://www.avenard.org/kindle2/Savory-0.08.tar.gz

USB Network Hack:
http://www.avenard.org/kindle2/usbnetwork-0.7.tar.gz

UFH Font hack:
http://blogkindle.com/2009/11/uninst...ersion-of-ufh/

Screen saver:
TBD

If it's still failing, press the HOME key.
Press any key to start the search box ; press delete and type:
;debugOn
followed by:
;dumpMessages

This will create a log file on the USB disk drive ; check it for any failures and see what files is reported as corrupted.
It will be a message like:
Code:
ota_install: C def:patch:patchinfo="/opt/amazon/ebook/config/netfront.ini":checksum failure
And report back here...

Error message for 2.3 update

Hello All,

Thank you for any help in advance - I have been having problem with the 2.3 update. Unlike some people, I have opted not to hack my Kindle in any way, but my kindle 2 will not update.

I have followed the information that jyavenard has posted. In the error log, I have the follow entry for the update

091126:001143 system: E _otaupexec:def:checksum failure on image "update data 327610024-kernel"

Doing a google search, this does not provide any useful hits. I am hoping someone in this forum could shed some light on this.

I have also contacted amazon help support, but they have not been any help so far. If any other information needs to be provided, let me know, and I will be more than willing to get you information as quickly as possible.

Thanks!

Hi,

first of all: Thank you jyavenard for opening up this thread. Attached is my log file:

all_logs as of Thu Jan 01 21.43.48 GMT 1970.txt

there is one checksum failure:

Code:
700101:214101 ota_install: C def:patch:patchinfo="/opt/amazon/ebook/config/framework.mario.conf":checksum failure
right after that line it states:
Code:
700101:214102 system: E otaup:def:image update failed
So I asume this checksum error is the reason for the update failure.

*

There are a lot of non fatal failure as this
Code:
700101:045712 wand[1585]: I lipc:evts:name=nonfatalFailure, origin=com.lab126.wan, fparam=-10:Event sent
Code:
700101:045712 wand[1585]: I lipc:evts:name=nonfatalFailure, origin=com.lab126.wan, fparam=-10:Event sent
Code:
700101:045712 cvm[2222]: I LipcService:EventArrived:source=com.lab126.wan,name=nonfatalFailure,arg0=-10:
Code:
700101:045712 cvm[2222]: com.amazon.ebook.framework.device.comm.WANConnectingException: WAN Connection Failure
I have my Network set off since I'm outside the US and won't have any use of it.

Thanks

Ok. I found out that
Code:
framework.mario.conf
is modified by the screensaver hack. In the mobileread wiki (for the kindle 2 screensaver hack) I also found the following advice:

Note: Currently the v0.3 hack does not restore the framework.mario.conf md5sum to match the original. thus, future updates _may_ still fail.

I guess that is exactly whats happening here?
So is there a way to restore the correct md5checksum?

Well, there is a version 0.4 for the kindle 2 but not for the KindleDX, which is still at 0.1

There is a wiki entry for the KindleDX Screensaver as well. https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kind...een_Saver_Hack It states nothing as to the 0.3 error. Then again the DX hack is still 0.1 (confusing).

Even more confusing is the (in the wiki entry for the DX) linked uninstall.bin. It's update_ufh_uninstall-kdx.bin (old). But "ufh" is unicode font hack, right? What has it to do with the screensaver hack?

What remains is the single question?
How to restore the framework.mario.conf md5 checksum.

This doesn't apply to the DX ... The screensaver hack on the DX is different and doesn't modify that file

Only if you restore the file to be exactly what it was before... There's no other way

You've posted your problem in like 4 thread; it's hard to track... I responded on how to do it in 2 of them.

That means you didn't uninstall one of the packages you previously installed.
Check the first post and use the appropriate uninstaller

This one is puzzling....
I would try to re-download the original 2.3 firmware... Because the issue is one of the update within the package has an incorrect checksum... Sounds like Amazon screwed up one of the incremental image...

What version is your Kindle running ?
If it's running an old version like 2.0.1 ; you could try first upgrading to 2.0.3 first ; then 2.3
I have a 2.0.3 here ; I put it there just in case you can't find it:
