Wilde, Oscar: Complete Works | v.4.0 | Update 16 Apr 2017

The Coxcomb Series, Vol. 3:

A day later than announced, because somehow all the full stops in ‘The Ideal Husband’ had vanished, here’s

THE COMPLETE WORKS of OSCAR WILDE

Name:	wilde2.jpg
Views:	1415
Size:	38.2 KB
ID:	86455

It collects all of his plays (including the fragments), his only novel, his fairy tales and short stories, the poems, all of his essays, lectures, reviews, and other newspaper articles, basically based on the 1909 edition of his works.

So, you’ll find in here:

THE PLAYS.
Vera or the Nihilists, The Duchess of Padua, Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, The Importance of Being Earnest, Salomé (the French original and Bosie’s translation, and the fragments of La Sainte Courtisane and A Florentine Tragedy.

THE NOVEL.
The Picture of Dorian Gray. (Both versions. See update 3.0.) (No Teleny here, as I don't think it’s his.)

THE STORIES.
All the stories and tales from The Happy Prince and Other Tales, Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and Other Stories (incl. The Portrait of Mr. W.H.), and A House of Pomegranates.

THE POEMS.
I’ve used ‘The Collected Poems of O.W.’ and only later discovered that there are some poems missing. These will be restored in a future update. (see update 2.0)

THE ESSAYS etc.
The four essays from ‘Intentions’, The Soul of Man under Socialism, De Profundis (the unabridged version!), The Rise of Historical Criticism, the lectures (The English Renaissance in Art, House Decoration, Art and the Handicraftsman, Lecture to Art Students), and all of the Articles and Reviews that were published in the ‘Reviews’ and ‘Miscellanies’ volumes of the Complete Works. (see update 2.0)

I have thoroughly checked the texts against their original print editions, harmonised the formatting, put the italics back in where necessary, assigned the proper classes to poems, quotes, subtitles, etc., corrected the section breaks, and made active footnotes. Also, I put all the Greek words back in ‘The Rise of Historical Criticism’. Fonts are embedded in the epub to get the Greek letters and small caps, and dates for premieres/first publications are given wherever available.

For easier navigation, there are tables of contents for each section and one for the whole volume. At the end of each text there are links bringing you back to the respective contents tables. I have also added an alphabetical index for the poems and a combined one for all the essays, lectures, articles, and reviews.

As I already mentioned, some of the poems are missing and will be restored in the future. I might also add the 13-chapter version of ‘Dorian Gray’ in an update if you’re interested.

This was a lot of work and I would like to make this edition as reliable as possible, so it would be great if you could send me a short message if you find any errors or texts missing. Any other feedback would also be appreciated, of course.

Best,
pynch.

And again, here’s a reminder that I have also uploaded the writings of Oscar’s contemporaries Max Beerbohm and James Whistler.

Next: The Complete Virginia Woolf and the New Raven Edition of Edgar Allan Poe.

update v.1.1 | 14 May 2012.
Fixed the Opf-File.

update v.1.2 | 16 May 2012.
Fixed Lane.

update v.2.0 | 9 Nov 2012.
Updated with the missing poems and reordered chronologically. The two “American” articles have also been added.

update v.3.0 | 5 Apr 2014.
Updated with the 13-chapter version of The Picture of Dorian Gray that was published in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890. I also fixed some formatting mistakes in the other texts.

update v.3.1 | 5 Apr 2014.
I forgot a modification in the stylesheet, which is now fixed.

update v.3.2 | 28 Nov 2014.
Proofed Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and Other Stories against the 7th Methuen edition, 1912, and corrected about 50 mistakes.

update v.3.3 | 21 Dec 2014.
Proofed The Happy Prince and Other Tales, A House of Pomegranates, and Intentions against the 1908 Methuen edition, The Duchess of Padua, Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest against the 1909 Methuen edition, Vera against the 1927 Methuen edition, and the 13-chapter The Picture of Dorian Gray against the original magazine release. About 800 mistakes and variants were corrected.

update v.3.4 | 3 Jan 2016.
Proofed Salomé, La Sainte Courtisane, and A Florentine Tragedy against the 1921 Methuen & Co. edition, the Salomé translation against the 1922 John Lane edition, The Soul of Man under Socialism against the 1908 Methuen & Co. edition, the 20-chapter The Picture of Dorian Gray against the first book edition, “De Profundis” against the unabridged version in The Letters of Oscar Wilde, ed. by Rupert Hart-Davis, 1962, “The Rise of Historical Criticism”, the four Lectures, and “Poems in Prose” against Essays and Lectures, Methuen & Co. 1913, the texts from the sections “Essays and Criticism” and “Letters” against Miscellanies, Methuen & Co. 1908, and the poems against the 1909 Methuen & Co. edition. About 1200 mistakes and variants were corrected.

update v.3.5 | 21 Aug 2016.
Proofed Reviews against the 1921 Wyman-Fogg edition (which is presumably a straight reprint of the 1908 Methuen edition) and corrected hundreds of mistakes and variants.

update v.4.0 | 16 Apr 2017.
I have added The Letters of Oscar Wilde (Rupert Hart-Davis, ed., Harcourt, Brace & World, 1962), the 1st edition text of De Profundis, and the revised, much longer text of “The Portrait of Mr W.H.,” reproofed almost all texts against earlier book editions or magazine releases authorised by Wilde himself, and included the pagination for most books.

Thank you.

You might want to modify the OPF file, changing the <meta name="cover"> element to point to "wilde2.jpg", instead of "item5". And change the cover guide element as well.

Beautiful, beautiful work, once again. Thank you so much for your efforts!

I have only thrown a quick look at "The Importance of Beaing Earnest", and it seems that there is some error concerning the character names. In the beginning, Algernon talks to Algernon instead of Lane, and this repeats later in the First Act when Lane returns. It's only mildly confusing, and doesn't seem to occur at any other place (as far as I have checked), but should probably be fixed...

Thanks so much for another wonderful effort.

Great find! I will add the two texts on that site, along with the missing poems, as soon as I find the time.

That one fell victim to a short-lived Gertrude Stein project and a time travel machine …

Thanks for reminding me, I will upload it again soon.

I have proofed Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and Other Stories against the 7th Methuen edition, 1912, and corrected about 50 mistakes. These should be reliable now, so please let me know if you find any mistakes in them.
