Grand Banks, Newfoundland, Canada
An area of underground plateaus southeast of Newfoundland in the Atlantic. The mixing of the cold Labrador Current with the warm waters of the Gulf Stream lift nutrients and creates an excellent environment for fish. It also means the area is usually foggy. Surprise, Arizona, USA
A city in Maricopa County, Arizona. Would you be surprised living in this city? The city was founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler, who named it Surprise as she "would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much". Surprise officials previously thought the city was founded by Statler's husband, real estate developer and state legislator Homer C. Ludden, but in 2010 property records were discovered which listed Statler owning the land before she met Ludden. |

Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, USA
was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845, when the capital was moved back to Honolulu. In the 19th century, Lahaina was the center of the global whaling industry, with many sailing ships anchoring at its waterfront; today pleasure craft make their home there. Lahaina's Front Street has been ranked one of the "Top Ten Greatest Streets" by the American Planning Association. |

Alert, Nunavut, Canada
A weather station settlement in Nunavut, Canada, that, by its cold temperatures, doesn't look very alert. Alert, in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada, is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, 817 kilometres (508*mi) from the North Pole. Its permanent population was reported as zero in the 2011 census, but military and scientific personnel on rotation were present. It takes its name from HMS Alert, which wintered 10*km (6.2*mi) east of the present station, off what is now Cape Sheridan, in 1875–1876. Alert has many temporary inhabitants as it hosts a military signals intelligence radio receiving facility at Canadian Forces Station Alert (CFS Alert), as well as a co-located Environment Canada weather station, a Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) atmosphere monitoring laboratory, and the Alert Airport. Toms River, NJ, USA
A small town in Ocean County, NJ. It has served as a location for such television shows as Boardwalk Empire and The Jersey Shore. It has been ranked as the 15th safest city in the United States and hosts one of the largest Halloween parades in the world. It was also near one of the sites of the New Jersey shark attacks that occurred in 1916 and were said to be the inspiration for the movie Jaws. (Those attacks were even mentioned in the movie.) Rape, (county subdivision) Sussex, England
A rape is a traditional territorial sub-division of the county of Sussex in England, formerly used for various administrative purposes. Their origin is unknown, but they appear to predate the Norman Conquest. Historically the rapes formed the basis of local government in Sussex. There are various theories about their origin. Possibly surviving from the Romano-British era or perhaps representing the shires of the kingdom of Sussex, the Sussex Rapes, like the Kentish Lathes, go back to the dawn of English history when their main function would have been to provide food rents and military manpower to the king. The rapes may also derive from the system of fortifications devised by Alfred the Great in the late ninth century to defeat the Vikings. |

No Place - Is in fact in County Durham, England.
No Place is a small village near the town of Stanley in County Durham, England, east of Stanley and west of Beamish. Situated to the south of the A693, it is home to an award-winning real ale pub, the Beamish Mary Inn (dating from 1897 and originally known as the Red Robin), and lies near the Beamish Mary coal pit. The local church is known as the "Tin Chapel". The origins of the village's unusual name are uncertain; however, theories include a shortening of "North Place", "Near Place" or "Nigh Place", or that the original houses of the village stood on a boundary between two parishes, neither of which would accept the village. |
