Mobipocket - the end of an era

Quote:
Dear Publisher,

To better serve authors, publishers and customers, Amazon is consolidating eBook sales & publishing to the Kindle Platform. Mobipocket will not accept new eBook submissions for sale on Mobipocket.com or its affiliated retailers after Dec 2, 2011 and will stop all sales and remove your existing eBooks after Jan 2, 2012.

If you wish to make your books available to Kindle customers, please use our Kindle Direct Publishing system (http://kdp.amazon.com). If you have already published your titles to the Kindle Store through Kindle Direct Publishing, they are already available to Kindle customers.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact us via email at mobipublishers@amazon.com

Thank You
So Amazon makes its final move to eventually close the oldest large worldwide eBook-shop (that was loooong before you ePub kittens came along ... ) and say good-bye to MOBI.

After Microsoft's decision not to support LIT anymore this is the second time within one year that a once popular format (and its infrastructure) will vanish into oblivion, and again one infested with DRM.

Makes you wonder what the situation will be like in, say, 2021 ... for both DRM and eBook formats.

This was to be expected. My mobi books already live a happy afterlife on readers they were never intended to show up on (thanks to all the people, who made this possible). It also strengthens my determination, to always dust off my books first after purchase.

One thing I wonder: mobi had a nice dictionary-implementation. The current epub readers mostly come with built in dicts (Sony, etc.), or some free stuff, which is pretty awfull (pocketbook).
When will epub come up with something comparable, or did I miss something?

Mobipocket.com always had DRM on its books, so changing to Amazon will not change anything there.

This is by no means the end of a "format". It is merely the end of an early DRM scheme and its sole vendor outlet. The MOBI format lives on.

That should be "...mobi has a nice dictionary-implementation. This hasn't ended with the closing of the old Mobipocket store and the end of its old DRM scheme. The current Amazon Kindles still use the same dictionaries provided they lack DRM or use the newer Amazon DRM.

We'll wait and see how much of MOBI will survive in KF8. It is a robust and reliable format, but it is definitely outdated, with a lot of deficiencies in today's XML and CSS standards.

My hope is that we'll have a single consolidated format and No drm.

Of course I'm an optomist!

Yes, if they don't have DRM on them. Whether you need to change the file extension to .azw I don't know.

Depending on the success of KF8, the mobi format may be put "on notice," but since the latest generation of Kindles still supports the mobi format, I suspect it will be quite some time before the mobipocket format is officially retired. Many years in fact.

I don't think the mobi format will ever be retired, in the sense of the present kindles being unable to read them. Amazon will simply not use it anymore, that's it.

The new Kindles support Mobipockt files with both the *.mobi and *.prc extensions provided the files are not restricted with the antique Mobipocket DRM. The non-DRM *.mobi and *.prc files posted here on MR work fine with all Kindles.

But since MOBI hasn't "vanished into oblivion," we're still holding steady at two.
