Where to go after Harry Potter

Hello everyone. I am currently reading the Harry Potter series by J. K Rowling. I like the books because of the friendships, fun, not too serious, not too "out there", etc. What should I try after Harry Potter? I love the books and movies but do not read other books on magic in general....my wife got me in to HP.

If you like fantasy with humor, you might want to try Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Lots of humor and several different "tracks" to watch: the Rincewind books, Witches, the AP Watch, Death, and Tiffany. All available in ebook versions.

Are there any particular plot/theme/setting elements you liked about Harry Potter that you'd like to see more of?

For example:

Magical families sending their children to special boarding schools for training (and also boy who turns out to be born into a predestined position of great power): Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series, especially The Nine Lives of Christopher Chant.

"Hidden" magic secretly practiced by children discovering they're wizards amidst the mundanes of our "own" world: Diane Duane's Young Wizards series, starting with So You Want to Be a Wizard.

The Chosen One and his predestined quest to find the doohickey and save the world against the ultimate evil which has been dominating it for far too long: certain David Eddings' series (well, all of them, but only the Belgariad/Malloreon and the Elenium/Tamuli series are reasonably well-written and decently entertaining; people say his books go downhill after that).

Boy with great powers is born and kind of squabbled over by various factions who want to use him for their own ends but eventually finds his own way, with a little help from his friends, and it all takes place in England in the late 20th century: Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens. Pratchett's Discworld books above are also generally excellent and highly recommended. Your mileage may vary for Gaiman; I love his short stories and his graphic novels, but his regular novels tend not to do it for me.

And so forth.

I've heard the James Potter series by G. Norman Lippert is quite good.

You could also try The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula K. Le Guin.
The first book, A Wizard of Earthsea, is also about a boy at a school for wizards.

...but seriously, I will go with hedwig and recommend "The Earthsea Trilogy."

This is excellent childrens' literature and also very appealing for adults.

For something similar-but-different to Harry Potter, you might try Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind. It's the life story of a boy whose family is killed and he grows up to be a powerful wizard after attending magic school...but it is much more adult and compelling than Potter, in my opinion. The sequel is about to come out.

Maybe you would like the Narnia books, as they are also easy to read, and often about friendships.

I found that the Percy Jackson series was similar to HP without seeming to be a rip-off. Great characters, great stories and great world-building, lots of humour as well.

I second the Diana Wynne Jones recommendation; try "The Dark Lord of Derkholm" or "Howl's Moving Castle", and I guarantee you'll be laughing out loud.

If you're enjoying the HP series, I'd like to suggest that you reread it at some point. You'll see things you didn't see the first time, because the second time around you'll know so much more. Those books are an enjoyable reread.
