Yes, but as for HTML in the beginning you have to either just use the formatting that all devices or programs can handle or you have to optimize for each device.

Heh, I am just repeating what they say on their website (emphasis mine):

Quote:
"EPUB" allows publishers to produce and send a single digital publication file through distribution and offers consumers interoperability between software/hardware for unencrypted reflowable digital books and other publications.

Holy crap .... no right to return a defective product? That's just wrong on so many levels.

Sony Reader actually does support Scalable Vector Graphics (e.g. Hindawi EPUB with math utilizes it). The error must be somewhere else. It would be nice if correction could be added to the original post.

mtravellerh, things like this really boggle my mind, since making ebooks is not rocket science. I'm pretty sure a high school kid who is computer savvy can make pretty decent ebooks.

I have long felt that the lack of a cover specification in the EPUB standard is the cause of a lot of confusion.

Please tell me this is just an April Joke. If you replace "ebook" by any other product name if would certainly looks like one.

Any idea where the problem might reside?

Thanks for the analysis, mtravellerh.

It seems to boil down to this:

The publishers over here will have to learn that the creation of proprer e-books require work and knowledge. After the hullaballoo about e-reading they started this year with they are in danger of cutting into the new twig of their tree even before it starts to grow into something stronger. Just trying to make easy money will put people off.

So, they need productive feedback to learn from. By users. Mail them with a link to this thread.

I fully agree. Everyone is recommending something different and I don't think that wrapping a JPG in a SVG itself wrapped up in a XHTML flow is such a wonderful idea.

German publishers (and vendors) chose the ePub format, knowing perfectly well that it would be used with the Sony Reader (currently the only device on the German market supporting their books).
Don't forget the iPhone with Stanza.
While per se not being an eBook reading device there are much more (a LOT more!) iPhones than Sony Readers out there! So there's no need - neither for a publisher nor for a vendor or for a customer - to rely on "Sony-only" epubs.

Not with the iPhone and the BeBook at hand and the Cybook (with hopefully soon coming epub update ...) waiting to be released in Germany.
