Catalog Anthology/Multiple Author Question

My wife's book list has many anthologies and books with multiple authors, and Calibre correctly re-lists the book under each of the individual authors.
However, when I print a Catalog, it apprears that an anthology/multiple author listing only includes the first listed of the authors from the metadata.

Why doesn't Catalog create multiple entries, one for each author? When hunting in a book store and spotting one of 'her authors' in an anthology etc. who is to say 'which is listed first'?

Is there a setting I can toggle to generate multiple Catalog author entries?

The Catalog feature does not currently support relisting books with multiple authors.

I will take a look at adding it, but it won't be right away. Are you thinking that the only difference would be in the Authors list, where the book would be listed once for each author?

Yes, the Authors list seems to be the only area.... someone else may have a thought for other areas...

These days in addition to a regular 'anthology', there are so many past and present authors who used pen names. In hunting books this also becomes a problem so a cross filed Author listing would be a help.

Thanks

I had the same problem, but worked around it. I decided to leave all the authors in the author category, but under author sort I put Anthology. Then used quick preferences plugin to change the files to put the books under the author sort instead the author. This puts them all in one place is something searchable without the file names getting to long with so many authors.

This was a good work around for cookbooks as well.

Just an idea

Here's how I plan to implement the cross-referenced author feature.

When generating the By Authors section, scan for books with multiple authors. For each book with multiple authors, create clone entries per additional author. For each individual author, modify its clone so that the individual author is listed first among the multiple authors, with an author_sort value to match.

For example, if we have 'War of the Worlds' by H.G Wells & Josh Friedman & David Koepp, it will be listed three times in Authors.

Original Author/Author Sort:

Code:
H.G Wells & Josh Friedman & David Koepp / Wells, H.G & Friedman, Josh & Koepp, David
Cross-referenced Author/Author Sort:
Code:
H.G Wells & Josh Friedman & David Koepp / Wells, H.G & Friedman, Josh & Koepp, David
Josh Friedman & H.G. Wells & David Koepp / Friedman, Josh & Wells, H.G & Koepp, David
David Koepp & H.G Wells & Josh Friedman / Koepp, David & Wells, H.G & Friedman, Josh
The first entry would show up with the 'W' Authors, the second with the 'F' Authors, the third with the 'K' Authors. All entries would still list 3 authors with otherwise identical metadata.

Sound OK?

I've submitted a patch to Kovid which should be in the next release.

There is now a checkbox in the 'Other options' section of the Generate catalog dialog for Author cross-references. If ticked, books with multiple authors will be relisted in the Authors section with individual entries for each author.

If the Descriptions section is enabled, the Author link points back to the original entry in the Authors section.
