Keyboard replacements

While the builtin keyboard isn't bad, it is lacking some things that are needed for proper work on remote terminals, like ctrl and alt keys.
Is there a replacement keyboard that contains the full keyset so my connection to my screen/irssi session will be fully functional?
I already have ConnectBot installed, I just need a full keyboard now to use with it.

Thanks!

The control key doesn't work on the Edge. For example, ctrl-A doesn't select all the text.

Nate,
The control key does work. It just doesn't work the way that it works in Windows. That is because Android is NOT Windows and never will be. Not saying that some bright programmer won't build in some standard windows key functions, but it presently isn't there.
You can select all text by doing it the Android way....touch and hold on the screen until the menu pops up and then select "Page". On the resulting menu is Select Text. Tap that and then drag your stylus through the text you want to select. Not what you are used to in Windows, for sure, but again.....this isn't Windows.

Yes, I do know how to do the touchscreen thing, but that's a waste of time when I'm typing. It's also inconvenient to have to remove my hand from the keyboard and reach out at arm's length to touch the screen.

And besides, if they're going to have support for USB keyboards, then it's going to have to be full support (or none at all). Anything in between is a bug.

P.S. They don't have to provide support for Windows keystrokes. I'll settle for Linux, Unix, or Mac keystrokes. Or you can tell me where to find the ones for Android and I'll learn those as well.

Are there other software keyboards that might be better that work with the eDGe?

I use ThickButtons on my edge (and my Nexus, and my Incredible. it's the only thing that makes software KBs usable for my "man-sized" fingers)

I know that Better Keyboard works on the edge....but I've not used it extensively.

Thanks Cheyennedonna,

I installed the application, turned it on in Settings/Locale, but I don't see any difference in the keyboard itself. I even rebooted the Edge. Am I missing something?

Yes. I'm missing something. I didn't enable the "input method" as Boris describes in his post. Done. Now I'm using Thick Keys. Will give it a go. Thanks a bunch to all.
