Free Book - Shadowland (K)

Shadowland (Main/UK), the third title in the Zoe Lawrence Mystery series by Pam Leonard, is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of publisher North Star Press of St. Cloud. The paper edition is still to be released (coming in September), so I suspect the Kindle edition is using what the publisher calls "guided self-publishing", which they offer to select authors in order to guide them thru getting a professional looking book published (and which, presumably, doesn't include quite the same level of editing and proofing you might expect from a larger publisher).

Book Description
With Shadowland, Pam Leonard shatters the myth of Minnesota nice. In scene after powerful scene, Leonard explores the dark heart of homelessness and sex trafficking in the Twin Cities. The result is a twisted and harrowing journey down unexpected mean streets and dangerous alleyways. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss.

First off, name is Brandon and I work for the company that is publishing Shadowland. You are absolutely correct that Shadowland is being pre-released in electronic form prior to it's print release. Where you are highly incorrect is in assuming that the book was self published. This author has a traditional royalty contract. The book was available for free over the weekend as a promotion through Amazon.

For the record, the whole point of guided self-publishing is that the quality is indistinguishable from a traditional royalty book.

Thanks, Brandon, for the update.

Since I couldn't find it on your publisher site, it's hard to decide if guidance was used or someone just lied about the publisher.

I assume you assist in artwork for the cover and formatting for various platforms. Do you also do editing/proofing? Or just provide marketing assistance?

We do pretty much everything in-house except printing the books themselves.
