Mason, A.E.W.: The House in Lordship Lane, V1, 14 Dec. 2012

A.E.W. Mason (7 May 1865 – 22 November 1948) is best known for his 1902 novel The Four Feathers that may be the most filmed novel of the 20th century. He was educated at Dulwich College and Trinity College, Oxford. He led the Dramatic Society at the latter school and was intent on a theatrical career, appearing in a small number of works on the London stage during the late 1880s. During this period he also began writing in his spare time — his first novel was published in 1890. Among his many books, he produced five mystery novels about a French investigator Inspector Hanaud of the French Sûreté.

This epub, The House in Lordship Lane (1946), was the last of the Hanaud mysteries. Unlike the rest of the series, the story is set in England in the Lordship Lane area of South London. Daniel Horbury, Member of Parliament for the Kempston Division of London, is found with his throat slit in the garden room of his House in Lordship Lane, with Olivia, his wife, locked in her upstairs bedroom. Inspector Hanaud is visiting England, and Scotland Yard requests his help with the murder investigation.
