Sony to launch new online store
Supposedly to be set next year, the new store will offer "music, movies, books, and other downloadable content geared for its various electronics". Will this mean an improved ebook store as well?

I doubt it given the push by Sony to provide firmware updates to all their ereaders to support epub.
I like to think this is a step by Sony to sell their digital content globally unlike currently it is essentially limited to the US (UK is through a partner and not Sony itself AFAIK) |

According to the email that I got to upgrade the PRS-500, they will be upgrading to epub in mid December.

That would be such a welcome move on their part, even if you didn't use them it would force the existing bookstores that sell ePub to improve their stores whether it was range of stock, pricing or usability because if they weren't a better option then most would take the easy option instead.

Looks more like an attempt by Sony to ape the iTunes store. If they try to sell digital content internationally via this new store, they'll still have to deal with all sorts of international rights issues -- not just for books but for all the other content as well. Besides, they are likely to do some additional international expansion, but knowing Sony it's unlikely they would actually coordinate well enough to sync that with putting out a new digital store.

I have a couple of old Sony laptops that I just did some work on and saw that Sony had their own multimedia servers a long time ago, as pointed out in the CNET article. I wonder what they plan to do now to make this a success when they have been unable to get this going in the past.

Tales of Sony's music store and ATRAC format should be used around a campfire to scare little children and adults alike. *shudder* |
