How do you edit as Epub file, the text in Word?
I have a book in Word. How do I put it in Sigil to make it into an Epub file?

One easy option is to start with calibre; let it import the book and convert to ePub, and then edit in Sigil.
Or look into Atlantis Word Processor discussed over in this thread and create the ePub within AWP. |

And here is a good starting tutorial from Jedisaber: http://www.jedisaber.com/eBooks/formatsource.shtml . There's another very good fundamental tutorial around here somewhere that I constantly manage to forget. I hope someone will pop in and mention it. I am loath to disagree with Peter, but I'd strongly urge you not to use Calibre if you are just starting out. If the book is for your personal consumption, then, that's fine, but if you're trying to make a commercial book, you need to step through some basics so you know what to do when your content does not come out as expected. Hope that helps, Hitch |

Calibre does a useable job of converting Word Documents to epub. It is just that it puts in a lot of things that are special to calibre. This tends to make it difficult to understand, since the special things tend to be labeled calibre1, calibre2, calibre3, etc, instead of what kind of function they are performing. It can make it hard to understand to edit it if it needs more work.
You can save Word documents as HTML which Sigil imports for further editing. Toxaris has done a Word macro that improves the HTML that Word outputs. It is worth looking into. If you are looking for something automatic, you are likely to be disappointed, especially if the book is heavily formatted with columns, drop caps, pictures, etc. For heavily formatted books, it is often best to output it as PDF, which allows precise formatting. |

Hitch; I've got no problems at all with your comments I suppose I should have prefaced it by saying it all depends on what the purpose of the conversion is.
In fact I would rather not disagree with a person like Hitch who does this professionally. I merely stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night! Last edited by PeterT; 06-11-2013 at 08:43 PM. |

I also would not advise to use Calibre. The code that it produces is, although correct, not user/editor friendly at all and can be done much better.
I personally use my own add-in for the process that consist out of several procedures to help check the Word document and even create a basic ePUB out of it (with clean code). You will need to touch it up in Sigil, especially with regards to the TOC. You can find it via my sig. The macro also still works of course. |

I admit I'm not sure what the Holiday Inn Express has to do with it, but, hey! Safe travels. ;-) Hitch |

I was sure I had seen ads from someone giving Tax (or other advice) who would then add it he was not an accountant, but had stayed at Holiday Inn the previous night.

I second Toxaris's plugin for word.
I've not played too much with it, but it does speed up the clean-up process. I'm going to have to find the time to properly testdrive it but so far it beats using Words Save As option hands down. (I also need to find the time to make all the corrections Jellby found in my Lovecraft books, but thats another story) |

There is another way, very useful if you don't have MS word or OS.
Install writer2epub in Libre Office, use Libre Office to open the word doc, save as odf format and convert with writer2epub. The resulting epub can then be manipulated in Sigil to give the results wanted. |
