ASUS Eee Tablet!

Unbelievable specs!

Quote:
Don't call it the Eee Pad, this is ASUS' Eee Tablet -- a digital notebook with a 2,450 dpi touchscreen and lickity quick 0.1 second page turns on a backlight-less TFT-LCD offering 64-levels of grey. To put that pixel density into perspective, the new iPhone with its rumored 960 x 640 pixel display is expected to pack around 325 pixels per inch, the Kindle 2 measures in at 167 ppi, and the iPad just 132 ppi. As such, ASUS is calling its Eee Tablet one of the world's most accurate and sensitive note taking devices available. The other being paper and pencil of course. While the Eee Tablet will serve up texts and ebooks for reading just fine, ASUS is really pushing the note taking feature with built-in notepad templates and the ability to store, sort, tag, and annotate your notes on the fly. It comes packing a MicroSD slot and 2 megapixel camera for snapping lecture slides which students or professionals can then annotate and then sync back to a PC over USB. Battery life? 10 hours -- so yeah, it's not E-Ink... but then again it's not E-Ink.
I wonder ... I wonder ... I wonder so many things about this gizmo, but off the bat:
1. Is it PixelQi?
2. Why aren't they pushing the e-reader features more?
3. How much?
4. When?

Very, very interested ...

You would expect them to have pushed the fact that it could also do colour if they had been using pixelqi.

There are plenty of ereaders on the market, they want to put the emphasis on the new features it has.

2450dpi? That sounds a little unbelievable.

Indeed. They also packing a 2MP camera with this thing. It's an interesting combo with a grey scale screen. Perhaps it is meant to be used instead of a scanner for documents?
I am really looking forward to some more info on this device.

Update: Uh, ok, we've received clarification. Apparently, when ASUS says "a 2450 dpi touch resolution screen" they actually mean a 2,450 dpi input sensitivity. In other words, annotations probably will feel like writing on paper, or an 8-inch 1024 x 768 pixel panel, anyway.

But this makes it all better:

Update 2: We've just been told to expect the Eee Tablet to cost somewhere between $199 and $299 of the green stuff when it launches sometime in September.
If they stick to this price, I'm buying one.

Why on Earth would anyone believe a display has 2450ppi?

This looks really fascinating though. I want to see how it handles in the real world. If the latency isn't too bad, it could be a very interesting note taker. And to think, I've invested so much in stationery!

I'm going to keep a close eye on this one. It might just be the ideal "digital sketchpad" I've long sought after.

Yeah if the resolution is reasonable, the response is lag-free, and the software is decent, it could be a real nice device for notes and sketching. It seems to be the same input resolution as a Wacom Bamboo (half that of the Intuos). I've got a Bamboo and can say it's pretty good.

A short video is in, courtesy of Engadget.
This must be a pre-production model. I am even more confused with that camera now.

Edit: There's a slide show on Engadget showing what the camera should be used for:
http://www.engadget.com/photos/asus-...-2010/#3026646

It seems you should be able to take a pic of the whiteboard, etc and then make notes on it. Hmmm. I wonder what the zoom/focus on this thing is. Imagine sitting in the lecture hall (nose bleed section of course) and trying to take a picture of the whiteboard ...

It's misleading. The screen isn't 2450 dpi. 2450 dpi refers to input sensitivity.

Gotta say, demonstrations of writing/drawing on touchscreens are always awful. Who realistically only writes 3 giant words on a page?

2 PRIMA- (page flip)
RY TYPES (page flip)
OF TORTO-(page flip)
ISES EXIS-(page flip)...
