Amazon pulls MacMillan?

I just found this out from Twitter.

MacMillan (which includes Tor) books and ebooks appear to have disappeared from Amazon.

See here.

Just tried that at Amazon.com. Advanced book search for publisher=MacMillan returned nearly 250,000 results. Publisher=Tor was about 12,000. Amazon.ca also show books by both.

Almost 250,000 books show up - but if you look at the vast majority, they're "available from these sellers" not directly from Amazon itself.

That includes the latest Robert Jordan, which you would think Amazon would sell directly.

Those are paper books, not digital.

I did a search for Robert Jordan's Eye of the World - First result is the mass market paperback from 1990, which has a link to the Kindle Edition - but that goes to a 404 error. It's not there anymore.

Are you _positive_ it was there before?

The article implies (but doesn't actually state) that both paper and ebook MacMillan books are gone so I just searched by publisher. Repeating the search for publisher=MacMillan and Format=Kindle Books returns 1,657 results. Publisher=Tor and Format=Kindle returns 4 results.

Note: I am in Canada but searching the US Amazon site. I don't know what impact that would have.

Wonder if it is just a glitch or Amazon is about to make some announcement?

Reading the web pundits belonging not to the Blogs, but to like CNN.com, NYTIMES.com, LATIMES.com, Reuters - some of these pundits were saying that the iPad is big enough news that Amazon will be forced to react in some fashion.

Now I wonder if they are correct? At the time I thought they just wanted to make good copy.

Amazon did react. They offered a new royalty deal a week before the iPad announcement.

Okay, I remember seeing this headline in the news and did not read the article - my mistake.

Are you saying that Amazon is acting as a publisher? I really have no idea (but should). Amazon deals directly with authors?

It was announced on Tor.com that it was going to be there - and in the comments thread on this post someone mentioned having emailed a screenshot from their kindle. (Comment #9), and since Tor didn't sell it DRM free it would have had to come from Amazon.

Hmm.. I just bought The Eye of the World night before last. Now a search brings a page with all of Jordan's Kindle books marked "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available."

Guess I'd better not delete it..

Wow! Just wow.

Stuff like this I like to hear about because devices like the iPad and the SideKick are asking us to keep our data in "the Cloud" - then events like this come around.

Twelve hour glitch - no biggie; but more than that....

This stuff just reminds me how crazy it is...the authors (like Scalzi) find out 2nd or 3rd hand that their books are no longer for sale somewhere they just assumed they would be...and they don't know really who to ask why.
