Post NEC develops A4, A3 e-paper modules

NEC LCD Technologies, a NEC subsidiary, has developed multiple sizes (A3 and A4 equivalent) electronic paper modules using a microcapsule electrophoresis system. NEC says the new e-paper modules have a higher visibility and gradation when compared to general newspapers. The e-paper features 16 step grayscale, has a white reflectivity of 43 percent and a contrast ratio of 10:1. Additionally, e-paper modules can be used to form large screen displays by combining up to eight modules.

Full press release here.

Some specs:
Resolution: 1600(H) x 1200(V) pixels
Display area: 280.0(H) x 210.0(V) mm
Diagonal screen size of 13.8 inches (35cm)
Drive system: Amorphous-silicon TFT active-matrix
Mode: Microcapsule electrophoresis system
Grayscale: 16 grayscales
Reflectivity:43% (typ.)
Contrast ratio: 10:1 (typ.)
Viewing angle: Vertical : Up 88 degrees, down 88 degrees
Horizontal : Left 88 degrees, right 88 degrees
(Contrast ratio at over 10:1)

Shame the press release has nothing on pricing or robustness.

I suspect that these displays must be on a glass substrate. The mention of amorphous silicon TFTs seems to indicate this, as does the subsidiary announcing it (NEC LCD Technologies - LCDs all use glass).

And mostly I suspect that if they weren't using glass they'd be making a lot of noise about the new substrate and how strong it was!

This almost makes me yearn for a eInk tablet that could run photoshop (or at least some half-decent graphics program).
