Anyone using "Freedom"?
I'm thinking of buying Freedom, an internet-blocking program. I'm spending too much time online, time I could spend reading (or doing other stuff ). Maybe if I implement temporary internet bans I'll get more reading done?
Anyone using internet-blocking software? Do you find it helpful, or do you find yourself 'cheating' often? With Freedom, you have to reboot your computer to 'unblock' the internet. I hate to restart my computer so I'm hoping this is a strong enough deterrent to stick to the offline periods. |

They can't answer you. Their internet is blocked.

I just use raw willpower to stay off the internet. Errrrr... except just now, of course. I wanted to be on the internet just now. But if I didn't, well... you'd be seeing quite a bit less of me, I can tell you that much. In fact, I'm going offline right now (as soon as I check a couple more threads).
P.S. Anybody else got that George Michael song stuck in their head now? Last edited by DiapDealer; 05-15-2013 at 06:33 PM. |

How ironic to call a net blocking soft "freedom"
Maybe you could ask someone that you trust (family for instance) to simply change your net password so that you can't access it for a while ? But even that seems strange. Best thing to do is discipline yourself and when you want to do something else, just go offline and do it |

I work from home and I TOTALLY RELY on Freedom! When I have work that I really don't want to do, I set it for 20 minutes (the minimum) and it helps me get going. Then I don't need it as much after that.
But if you are trying to get reading done that's not on the computer, you should be aware of something: if your computer goes to sleep, that time doesn't count on the timer. In other words, say you have 10 minutes left on the timer and your computer goes to sleep for an hour. When it wakes up, there will still be 10 minutes left on the timer. That has really messed me up before. I'm on a macbook, it might be different on a PC or a computer that doesn't go to sleep. I do wish I could set time limits per site per day (and this site would be on the list!). eP |

@Loosheesh: it's hard to ban some sites then you still the access to unban it again. hihihi. It's best if you know how to control yourself and focus on what you should do. If you really want to read, then you can do it |

That people pay for a program doing nothing more than disconnect a comp of the net made me laugh to tears. In cases when that's necessary (rare - I do it on boxes I suspect being infested) I pull the cat5. When having net access distracts you from reading; you don't want to read. |

You mean, actually have a life, friends, & family?
No way! Too messy. Besides, I'd have to change out of my pajamas.

Never used it or any software like it, but if you really want something like that, there's plenty of free/open source apps that will block things.
Cold Turkey is one, there's plenty of others too. Won't comment on how good they may or may not be as I've never used any of them. Last edited by JoeD; 05-16-2013 at 08:21 AM. |
