kterm isn't being started in a "login shell" but instead in an "interactive shell".

Check how your copy of kterm is being invoked.
Or -
Start in new shell instance in kterm:
su -l (su - lower case ell)
and then check - -
just be sure to remember to 'exit' both levels of command shell in kterm.

What if you log in through ssh and start kterm from command line:
/mnt/us/extensions/kterm/bin/kterm.sh

Check how your copy of kterm is being invoked. --> /mnt/us/extensions/kterm/bin/kterm..
Start in new shell instance in kterm: su -l (su - lower case ell) then check - -> now /home/root is correctly recognised..

So.. kterm is being started in an "interactive shell"?
How to make it start in a login shell?

just get a blinking cursor.. which stops blinking after some time..

able to get back by ^C though..

hmm, do you mean kterm does not start on your kindle?

Thanks for this great calculator, twobob.
Configuration changes done under View and Calculator work ok.
But in Edit->Preferences I can only exit with the Close button at the lower right and this button terminates the program instead of going back to the calculator screen (that's on KT, FW 5.1.2).

baf: How did you manage to operate in landscape on KT? I can change to landscape on the homescreen using the Orientation KUAL button but this is ignored by galculator.

Maybe twobob didn't set orientation argument in title scheme.
I set: L:A_N:application_ID:galculator_PC:N_O:URL
Possible orientations: Up, Right, Left
Try to replace galculator binary from attached zip.

The question is then, how scripts are started from kual and java environment.

will it work on a paperwhite? if yes, what's the way to change the orientation? your landscape mode screenshot really looks scrumptuous..

Great.. it works on my PW..

i changed the binary as well as run.sh..
only thing.. the basic mode also opens in landscape orientation..
no way to retain it in portrait ..?

That would have to be changed in source files.
Another thing you can do now is get rid of the lines setting orientation.
And change orientation in ad hoc mode, for example from kual orientation button, before starting galculator.
