"10 Reasons Why eBooks Suck" rant

  • Books are incredibly portable, especially smaller paperbacks
  • Books do not require batteries or any electricity to use
  • Books are not fragile (at least relatively speaking in comparison to electronic gadgets)
  • Books are easier on your eyes for long periods of reading (again, in comparison to LCD displays for example)
  • Books are shareable and re-saleable - the only “compatibility” issue is the language it’s written in
  • Books are CHEAPER. A device that costs $400??? Are you kidding me? My entire Amazon wish-list isn’t $400.
  • Books have a faster operating system - I can flip pages without an hourglass or having to wait for my eyes to render the new page
  • Books have better browse-ability - I can thumb through pages very quickly and can easily eyeball 1/3 of the way through a book or the last 25% of the book because the information I want was somewhere in that section.
  • Books have low-tech, cheap built-in DRM - it’s a pain in the arse to copy them….doable but a pain
  • I could think of more, but I’m too lazy

Hah, too funny! Though I've been catching myself thinking what-if scenarios lately... mainly, what would I do if there was some freak occurrence where I had no access to electricity for an extended period? I think the Sony Reader would last the longest, but then what? Yikes, don't even want to think about it! Probably end up playing card games with whomever is around.

Play cards? How can you play a card game without electronics of some kind?

I think this is a valid point, but it should be addressable in software, especially with the high-density e-ink screens, by using thumbnail images of the pages. When we flip through pages rapidly, it's as much the general shape of the page that we recognize as anything, I think. For example, we recognize chapter beginnings and ends, pages with lots of dialog and line breaks, illustrations, etc. Those would all be visible in a thumbnail view. I'd really like to see this on the iLiad.

you can't level a table with an ebook and if you use a reader the screen cracks and the table is wobbly again

but you can use those playing cards to level the table while you're waiting for your Reader to die...

The first apartment I had with my wife, the kitchen table has a slight wobble. I fixed it by putting an AOL CD under one of the legs.

and one reason ebooks suck is not enough restrictions. We need more DRM on them.

I've had my kids sit on books to reach table tops while visiting at meal time. I wouldn't do it with my reader cause it wouldn't smell the same again.

ebooks suck because on a cold winter's night, we cannot burn an ebook to keep warm when we don't have enough money to pay the heating bill because we've bought a really expensive reading device to be able to read these ebooks that we cannot burn to keep warm because we are broke.

If you wait long enough that Sony battery might blow up and give off heat.
