Can anyone 'splain this to me?

I've still got to spend the $10 from the last promo and I've been noodling around Audible.

Among the listings for Northanger Abbey I found this:

Whispersync for Voice-ready
Length: 7 hrs and 5 mins
Release Date:02-08-07
4.0 (181 ratings)
Regular Price:$19.59
Member Price:$9.95 or 1 Credit
Special Price:$0.99
and this:

Quote:
Northanger Abbey
UNABRIDGED
ByJane Austen
Narrated By Nadia May
Whispersync for Voice-ready
Length: 7 hrs and 33 mins
Release Date:01-16-08
4.0 (120 ratings)
Regular Price:$20.97
Member Price:$11.95 or 1 Credit
Special Price:$2.99
OK, one's half an hour longer. One's more expensive. But what's the difference?!

Looks like the two have different narrators: shorter says it has Donada Peters, longer is Nadia May. Since they're both unabridged, perhaps one of the readers performs slower/uses more dramatic narrative effects?

I guess it depends on whose voice you might prefer from the samples.

Some narrators speak faster/slower than others, which explains the time difference.

I was being somewhat deliberately obtuse, but the crux is that Ms. May and Ms. Peters are the same person. Clearly she made two recordings on two different dates and my guess is that she was commissioned by two different companies to read this public domain book, but it seems a little silly to see them both listed at Audible. Even though one is slower than the other, I would imagine that fans of Ms. May/Peters would go with the cheaper one.

Noms de lecteur for audiobook narrators kind of bug me. I try to remember who's who, but it's a nuisance. I suppose it's a way of differentiating between types of books for some of them, but mostly I can't discern a pattern anyway. As with Ms. May/Peters/McCaddon (another name she reads by).

LOL, I knew you'd be on to me! I can't imagine why someone would pay MORE for a book read by the same person.

I remember her because I like her narration a lot.

Do you know Simon Vance = Robert Whitfield?

Same. Learn something new every day.

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to post this for a while:

The AudioBookshop, site of the Audio Realms company, which long, long ago used to be in partnership† with the now defunct Dorchester for providing audio versions of their books, still offers a few freebie selections for signing up for their newsletter.

Give them a valid email, and they will send a link for a zipped mp3 file of one of three titles of your choice (ETA: apparently also with a discount deal for another selection from the same author):

Night Terrors by Jonathan Janz (horror e-book is still a freebie direct from Samhain Publishing and price-matched elsewhere)

Hot Vampire Kiss by Lisa Renee Jones (a Sourcebooks author, this paranormal e-book was a KDP Select freebie in the past and may repeat again)

A Kiss in the Rain by O.M. Grey (sfnal steampunk erotic ghost story available for 99 cents @ Smashwords)

Presumably you could sign up multiple times if you wanted all three, and the newsletter promises you more potential free audiobook alerts.

Though I'm not sure how well that works out, since I signed up for it years ago and they've only ever sent me the one email, which was the acknowledgement-for-signing-up one with the links to the older selection of free audiobooks that they originally had which was what I was originally signing up for in the first place.

Anyway, here's their Specials page with the details and the signup box for anyone who cares to give it a try.

† Hee, I like their error message for trying to hit the old freebie page on their site.

I like both Nadia May and Simon Vance very much and they've accounted for the majority of books I've listened to in the past six months, and in both fiction and nonfiction for both of them.

I know of Vance's alter ego, but I've only ever heard him under the Simon Vance name.

Another one I stumbled across because I thought, "Hey, this guy sounds an awful lot like Grover Gardner," is Grover Gardner = Tom Parker.

See, this is why we need a separate subforum, so we can have a thread that keeps track of things like this!

A common occurrence in print format, too. For example, I happen to be the same person as John Grisham.

I hadn't gotten any of them before (getting, so far, only the free stuff*) but I picked up The Hobbit today! Grisham, huh? Hmmmmmm....... Are you sure you didn't mean Tolkien?

*well, I did get that $10 coupon a month ago, and bought a few things with that.

When you search on a narrator's name at Downpour, the results will include alternate names; Downpour also includes alternate names in their narrator bios. That's how I learned of some of these.

I liked Grover Gardner's reading of Shane, but that's the only one of his I've heard.
