How to recover from bad install

1. Connect to your PC with your USB cable. Open the KoboReader drive that appears on your PC. Note that this is the Root directory for this process.

**Skip to step 4. if you haven't tried to install the alternative readers before.**

2. On your Kobo, delete any launcher .png files from the Library. On your PC, the .png files should disappear, if not Right click on the page and select Refresh.

OK, first if you have any script files that you have modified/tweaked for Koreader or the KoboLauncher, save them to your PC.

3. On PC; navigate to the .kobo directory. Delete the following folders: fmon, KoboLauncher, and koreader.

4. Go to https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9xqopxa4y...WEBVJUB/builds and download the current "pbchess 1.2.6.#_kobo.zip" (not the kindle one).

5. Copy "launcher.png" from the zip file to Root directory. Now safely eject the KoboReader drive from your PC. (Right click on the drive and select Eject). Then disconnect the USB cable. You should then see, on your kobo, the message that it is processing data/media and then the home page. Poweroff your kobo and restart it. If the .png file was not processed fully you should see the processing message during the startup.

6. The launcher image tile should be on your kobo's home page now, select it. It is just an image at this point, and you should see a full page image. Return to the home page.

7. Now that you are sure that the launcher png file has been correctly and completely processed by your kobo. Reconnect with your USB cable and copy the "KoboRoot.tgz" file from the .zip file to the .kobo directory. (Be sure it is in the .kobo directory.) Then safely eject the Koboreader drive and disconnect the USB cable. You should then see the Updating message on your kobo.

8. You should now have Sergey's launcher and fmon installed on your kobo.
Selecting the launcher tile should now open a menu page With Coolreader and Chess, other games and utilities (including a good USBnet). Once you are sure that all is working, Exit the launcher and return to your home page. (You may have to tap the picture a few times to return to the home page.)

(You can reconnect your USB cable and check that there is now fmon and KoboLauncher folders in your kobo's .kobo directory. You should also see a launcher.sh file in the fmon folder.)

9. Now for Koreader: Go to; http://code.google.com/p/koreader-pa...downloads/list and download the current nightly kobo build (unless posting here suggests an earlier build would be advisable for your kobo model/version).

10. Do the same as 5.&6. above for the koreader.png, this is important, you need to be sure that the launching image has been fully and properly processed, before going further.

11. Copy the koreader folder from the zip file to the .kobo directory of your kobo.

12. Now do 7. above again.

That's it, both launchers should work and you should have added some interesting capabilities to all that your kobo can do.

For future Koreader builds you will just have to copyover/merge the new koreader folder from the build download .zip onto your .kobo directory. No further need to add the .png or copyover the KoboRoot.tgz.

Luck;
Ken

Sergey's fmon This has been installed but no way to access ... well I can't find it anyway..

what is the recommended way to install and launch?
I hope I answered your questions.

If you rely on parts of the process that you installed earlier, you might not get it fixed.

Yes, Kobolauncher, fmon and Koreader. A fresh start. The instructions should be good for any similar issue.

In the file E:\.kobo\koreader\frontend\ui\input.lua, you find

Code:
-- For single-touch events (ABS.code).
local ABS_X = 01
local ABS_Y = 00
change it to

Code:
-- For single-touch events (ABS.code).
local ABS_X = 00
local ABS_Y = 01
You will probably need an editor that writes only line feed at the end of lines, rather than carriage return and line feed; cf. this.

Notepad++ makes reading and editing script files formatting your view with line numbers.

Another way to fix existing files, like the one you made, is to use a Hex Editor and find and remove any carriage returns 0B hex.

Hi again...And the saga continues lol

Done as suggested and actually got somewhere which was a result...BUT!!!

Sorry there's a but

when I enter the books menu KoReader starts straight away and once it does the only way I have found to exit it a reboot(home button doesn't work)..

When KoReader is running it is so slow and takes up to 5 seconds to respond to my screen touchs!!!

The long and short of it is I simply Can't use it as too slow and locks me out of the touchs other functions..

Any advise would be welcome.

regards

Did you try this several times?
Did you follow step 5 in each detail?

If you don't give up and start the whole installation again, you might even open library>books and open launcher.png before continuing with step 6. The reason behind opening library>books is, that when you do this the first time after putting a new book on the reader and enter the book menu, the reader creates a thumb image. This triggers fmon, and koreader is started.

This is a current limitation, cf this; I guess it must have been discussed several times before.

Koreader is very responsive on my Touch (as I know from another thread we are currently on the same FW version)

The major problem I am having with koreader is that it sometimes crashes as soon as it is launched. I then have to delete the settings.reader.lua and (but I am not sure if this is really necessary) all history files with a size of 0 byte, to make it work again.

My koreader folder is the same as in koreader-kobo-arm-linux-gnueabihf-v2013.03-631-g92ede68.zip; with the exception of the small change in input.lua. All other changes as producing history files and reading settings will be done by koreader itself.
