A friend of mine has recommended 'Stalingrad' by Vassily Grossman. It's a prequel to 'Life and Fate'. Both centered around WWII. I'll give them a go.

Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa! It was originally published as a series of shorter novels, but nowadays can be picked up as a single hefty tome. The Kindle edition comes in at 992 pages, with other editions ranging from ~850 to ~1250 pages.
