It is hard to tell if there is a lens, the screen looks like it should have something in front . There is no mark on the surface.

It stays.
What you can't see in the picture is the edge's of the spot are grey and fade to black in the center. We are estimating a spot 5px in diameter. That is a lot of pixels

The PEz screen is not soft like my LCD monitors or TV.

Well, technically the display includes all the layers. It should be noted that the E-Ink layer is truly black and white balls. The gray display comes from all the protective layers between the E-Ink layer and the outside layer you see. There are a UV layer, a protective layer and a couple of others. I suspect the new Pearl screen to actually be a feature of reducing the opacity of the various layers on top. E-Ink has been working a long time on this problem.
