I am a part of a reading group also, and we have an account, purchase our reading group book, log all of our respective kindles/apps and all read it at the same time for our discussions. then we just re-register back onto our own accounts for normal stuff.

Amazon originally had a 6 device limit, which seems to have been done away with. There was a news article... I want to say a year or so ago, where a 3rd grade reading specialist teacher had bought 15 Kindles to use in the reading lab at her school. I vasguely remember something about the device limit being waived, or supplemented for her class as a trial thing.

So thats what it means!
thanks!
I was curious to know. lolz....

So do you all have favorite places to purchase (or otherwise obtain) your ebooks? And what makes it your favorite?

I have made purchases at B&N (super easy since I have a nook), Borders (had a gift card) and Smashwords. It took this non-geek a while to figure out I needed Calibre to help with the non-B&N purchases, but it did fine. Haven't tried Sony or Kobo yet, and have yet to figure out how to do the online library thing with any success.

Are there other ebook seller sites out there that are making any sort of a splash?

I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction, so I buy from Baen. Reasonably priced, no DRM, and lots of my favorite authors.

For my technical needs, I usually buy from O'Reilly. I have enough of their pbooks to build a small cabin out of, so buying ebooks from them is just a natural progression.

BookView Cafe is a great place for the nifty and unexpected.

Smashwords is pretty good for multiple, unprotected formats, though their "meat grinder" aims for a vanilla presentation that doesn't always deliver the maximum experience for your chosen e-reader device.

I am now getting all my books professionally formatted because readers deserve the best possible experience for their hard-earned money.

I am perhaps not typical, but I don't license ebooks. Since I prefer the classics, and there's more out there in the public domain than I could read in a large handful of lifetimes, there just seems no need. Besides, the few times I've dipped my toes into the pool of modern bestsellers, I've only been reminded of why I don't read bestsellers.

So I spend most of my time at Freebooks, Google Books, and the like, for their free PD stuff (beats having to do my own formatting; though some of Google's stuff makes me wish I had).

Nathanael, check out the free ebooks here on MobileRead; they have the best formatting of any ebooks (including commercial ones) on the Web.

I tend to prefer ManyBooks or Feedbooks over Project Gutenberg because they tidy up a bit. Those three, along with MobileRead, are my main sources of PD ebooks. Google Books is terrible; what's good isn't unique, and what's unique isn't good. Anything they have that isn't either a bad scan, or a worse OCR of a bad scan, is available somewhere else and better.

I also buy a fair number of ebooks from MobileRead authors on Smashwords. Dunno why, but I just enjoy reading something written by someone I've spoken to, even if it's just chatting on a forum.

I went through smashwords meatgrinder and it seemed to format the book well. Perhaps a few minor gliches but not terrible. It's good to know of other sources that I just read on this thread.

Rats. And then there is the ebook that I want that I won't pay for. I do not want to pay 9 bucks for an ebook. I wish publishers would realize that lower prices do mean more sales--especially when the ebook cost more than a mass market.

Someday the book will come down in price in used format. Or I'll ILL it from the library...

Just checked your book on Amazon. Looks good. I put it on my wish list.

Yes, I think that publishers are missing a bet in not offering books that have been out for some time--mainly out of print titles--as ebooks priced to compete with used books.

are you sure? I found this forum to be pretty good and generic enough. I'm reading from a smartphone.
