S##T just got real.
Dunno why 3M is jumping on the library bandwagon but competition is good. |

3M's system looks to be a turnkey solution for libraries. Is this their first foray into the ebook industry?

I find this very interesting in light of the recent restrictions on library lending announced by HarperCollins. Perhaps this is seen as better/more control over lending. Last edited by Skydog; 05-20-2011 at 01:48 PM. |

Apparently, their 3M Library Systems division is big in the public library space.

Something that will take money away from the Overdrive eBooks and make some of us hav to get a new device. Screw you 3M.

I think that competition for Overdrive could be extremely library friendly given some of the recent rumblings in regards to Overdrive Contracts doubling and more in price. |

New hardware? I'm not interested. I have a perfectly working reader. If it's not supporting either the Kindle and/or the other epub / eink devices out there (the way Overdrive does) it's dead in the water. Why would a library invest in this proprietary system anyway?

Requiring a new, unique ereader would be a non-starter. Tablet computers only would be sad, too. It really has to work with the single best device for reading...the e-ink, dedicated readers people already own...or I don't think it's worth much.

Imagine, just like a real book! In case you were unclear about the concept: one, if not the chief advantage of ebooks from a library is that I no longer need to go there in person, driving there, dealing with limited opening hours etc. Take that away and it loses much of its appeal.

The chance that I'll drive to the library to check out an ebook is exactly zero.
