I'd like to see a bamboo bicycle generator like Gilligan had. He could power anything with it.

They have a solar power unit to wear on your back pack around 6 by 8 and it will power your cell phone. comes with many different plugs.

I believe this would work on the ereader also

LOL... the less stuff you have to carry, the better. It's all about convenience, I say.

Truth to that, provided the "combined device" does the desired job effectively....that's the trade-off as we engineers like to say/do....

It has too large of solar panels on both sides. it should cut it by 1/2 and ad a strip over the top and bottom.

Solar cells of the type put on a calculator are very light- Even assuming you would need to have several square inches on the front of a cover, I do not think the weight would be an issue.

Edmund's Scientific sells solar cell material. So:

need to know allowable charge to feed into ereader - any that can charge through a USB cable should be good candidates for fairly low charges;

need to know amount of solar cell material to create that much charge;

need way to connect charge coming from solar cells to feed into USB cable;

need USB cable end that fits that eBook reader;

glue and connecting mediums.

I'll be impressed if someone creates a Rube Goldberg solar eBook charger

Who needs commercial accessories anyhow!

Thanks for your reply, Rebecca.

If the solar cells that are used in conjunction with the reader are light then it should be a useful and versatile way of keeping the charge going. I could see this being very useful for those that may be traveling and particularly for hikers, etc, that may not have access to an electrical power outlet.

I'm assuming that this is for people on the go, right? If you're at home you could just plug it in, true?

So you're away from home and want to charge your reader. What's it need - 3 to 4 hours in the sun or bright light?

Are you going to leave something valuable sitting on a park bench or an indoor table while you walk around?
