I'll third Wicked and second The Name of the Wind. I don't usually do fantasy, but I loved Wicked and the Rothfuss one comes highly recommended to me.

I would also like to nominate Book one of the "Wheel of of Time".
The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan The peaceful villagers of Emond's Field pay little heed to rumors of war in the western lands until a savage attack by troll-like minions of the Dark One forces three young men to confront a destiny which has its origins in the time known as The Breaking of the World. This richly detailed fantasy presents a fully realized, complex adventure which will appeal to fans of classic quests. |

I'd like to nominate The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey. It's the first book in Five Hundred Kingdoms series.

I should provide a brief synopsis of the book I nominated, Return to Wonderland, so here goes:
Alice is now a grown woman with a dysfunctional family. She's a mental wreak: Her husband is cheating on her with a woman from his office, her youngest child, a son, is a sociopath, and her teenage daughter is out-of control. This time it's her daughter Calie who falls through the rabbit hole to that dark realm of unmitigated horror and madness known as Wonderland to come face to face with her family's dire destiny. |
