I am all for any type of advertising methods that would attract more people to buying an e-book type device. If more people were to buy such devices the prices will grow lower and the content available will grow larger. Sex has been used since the beginning of advertising to sell products. Marketing an e-book type device as a "culture oriented device" may bring in some people but it will not bring in the masses.

All I can say here is that the 2 girls in the STAReREAD shop in Taipei are much cuter than those shown in these pictures. Much cuter and really nice and fun to talk to too.

Lol, looks like the maker of this is all about "borrowing" many ideas in the production/sale of their product. The product itself looks almost exactly like the Sony Reader, perhaps they do what many companies in that country do best; get a product, reverse-engineer it, repackage, and sell the product cheaper than competition. Of course I think they missed the mark on cheaper by about $70.01 and will probably miss the target audience to boot. I, personally, balked a bit at Sony's price, but with all of the credits, et al, I ended up getting it for about $170.

As to the marketing schtick, this tact was borrowed from the stereotypical E3 marketing strategy of using pretty women in skimpy outfits to draw attention to their booths; e.g., booth babes.

Guess time will tell, perhaps I'll see one around here eventually; though I've already started to see the Reader pop up for local sale at a brick-and-mortar shop.

ahem .... girls to sell the products is one thing ... but can the first girl at least smile a wee bit? She looks a bit glum if you ask me.

Now back to the device. $410 is a tad too high for me. At that price, I'll get a Nokia N800 that may not have eink screen ... but has a host of other goodies and probably enough batt life to last as a decent ebook reader.

It seems that they are taking a more superficial approach to marketing than Sony or iRex have. It is almost as if the reader is another piece of jewlery. Something to been seen with. Reading is always optional. Paris Hilton, no. Paris wanna-bes, maybe.
