Just being nosy here, so feel free to tell me to bog off, but how many copies of this have you sold versus how many you have given away? Has anyone paid for one after they have had one for free?

Surprisingly, I've had a lot of success selling it. I couldn't tell you if folks are paying for it afterwards or not. I've always assumed that they'll pay for the next one if they enjoyed the first one. Establishing a readership is more important for me at this point. It's hard to get readers to take a chance on an unknown unless the book is really cheap or free. So I don't mind offering it for free every now and again simply to get my name out there.
On a similar note, the book is 50% off at Smashwords for the month of July!! It's in the Top 10 bestsellers at Smashwords. http://www.smashwords.com/books/cate...ular/1/any/any Use code SWS50 to get the discount. Enjoy! David |

Discounts are good, but I don't think you should give it away on Smashwords for one simple reason -- once you have bought something, even if you bought it for $0, it won't let you buy it again. So you have the same problem as people with "set your own price" books -- people won't really know how much it is worth to them until they have read it, at which point it would be too late to revise how much they paid.
Whereas if you put it somewhere else for free (eg on your own website?) you could put something at the end saying they could go and buy a copy if they enjoyed it enough to want to do so. |

Except that if you give it away free (on your website or Smashwords), you can't sell it on Kindle (well, you can, but if they find out, they'll set your royalty at zero).
A limited time promotion with a coupon at SM seems to be fine - then include a paypal or Amazon donation button on your website, along with links to the Kindle (or other store) versions, which the person could purchase to contribute. It's more likely, of course, that giving away a free book will result in purchase of future books, than the use of any of the above means to attempt to collect after the fact. Do enough of this and you can get a traditional publishing contract or an AmazonEncore one (or just make a living). |

A traditional publishing contract or AmazonEncore one would be lovely since I don't know that I would be able to make a living at this independently. I know Joe Konrath is doing it, but that doesn't mean we all will.
I'll just keep writing and hope for the best. |
