Uh, actually, what the courts said is Microsoft is the only player that *can't* lock anybody off their platform. (They really should have donated more to the Clinton 92 campaign.)

Sony, Nintendo, Blackberry, loads of others can and do lock out anybody they care to. Sony, for one, can (and has) locked out apps they explicitly invited onto their platform. Amazon and B&N do it too. Any number can play the lockout game except the Microsofties.

It is open enough that the OEMs can install whatever application they want (or are paid) to install on their RT tablets.

A Windows 8 (as opposed to Windows 8 RT) machine --be it tablet, desktop, or laptop -- can install EITHER the new "modern UI" Kindle application or the regular Kindle for PC application. I've actually got both running here. (I've been running Windows 8 on my laptop since August.)

How'd they compare functionally? The win8 version is probably prettier, but feature-wise? Better? equal? worse?
