Supermodel Bar Refaeli's iPad Confiscated By Israeli Customs

Earlier this week Supermodel Bar Refaeli was caught bringing an iPad into Tel Aviv International Airport without declaring it at customs. When they found it in her baggage she said that she thought that it was in a suitcase that was lost in transit.

She will have to pay fines of $170.00 to get it back.

Why'd you have To pay dutjes for stuFf which you'll take away again? So you have To pay dutjes for the jewelry you're wearing, your clothes, camera. Nice way to rip off tourists

they why would she pay duty tax? you pay duty tax for importing something into a country. if the ipad is her personal device she uses daily and she is just visiting israel and does not reside there, then she shouldn't be paying taxes. if you had to pay taxes on every item you took with you when you went on vacation you'd be paying out for every scrap of clothing on your back!

she might have a residence in america but if israel is her home country and she claims citizenship there then they could hit her with duty taxes for bringing it in. if she's just a tourist then their taxing her makes no sense.

I've traveled to europe and back twice and canada once so far with my ipad. never paid taxes on it once. thank god.

That was my original question... Who knows, if I go to another country on holiday, I'm often being asked how much money or valuable products I take with me. So some countries might think "hmm.. tax cashcow"

well they're usually looking to see if you're importing goods with you. if you're there for a week on holiday you're only going to bring a few pairs of jeans, not 20 or so. these days someone can easily bring a few hundred dollars in personal electronics with them, just think a cell phone, digital camera, laptop, mp3 player, gps receiver, ereader. they shouldn't charge you import tax if you're taking them for your personal use while you're just visiting.

there's more to this story than we're hearing.. and her excuse "it was in luggage i thought was lost" makes no sense. the two times I've lost luggage in the past 20 years i did everything i could to get it back (and did). you'd think she'd be less flippant about losing luggage with her ipad in it.. and wonder why she checked her ipad to begin with!

Well if you're uber rich there's much less concern of losing luggage, an iPad etc. as it's no big deal to replace them.

She lives in L.A. but she is still a citizen of Israel. I don't think that she is a United States citizen as well.

For whatever reason this wasn't explained in the media outlets that published the story everywhere.

It would be unbelievable if any non citizen of a country was taxed on goods over $200.00 brought with them on vacation. It would kill tourism and force everyone to leave most of their electronic gadgets at home.

of course it wasn't, it wouldn't have been a news worthy item then. by leaving out half the story, and israel creating a fiasco weeks before it's guaranteed to get hits on web sites, especially if they include photos of a pouting supermodel. lol.
