Conversion taking ages to begin

Ever since I got the Kindle and have been trying to convert to mobipocket, I have noticed the conversions take much longer. It used to be with LRF that I would click the convert button and it took at most 30 seconds. Now, when I click convert, it does nothing for upwards of 3 minutes (the little mac system icon that says it is working starts to go, but the Calibre conversion working icon does not) and then when it does start the conversion everything seems normal.

Is is supposed to take so long for the conversion to get going with mobi? These are 'liberated' ereader files (i.e. plain html) that I have cleaned up to remove as much 'code' as possible (i.e. they are the plainest of plain as I could get them). I have been making progress (down to 175 files left to do, from 500) but I am really slowed down by the long delay in Calibre commencing the conversion. I am on a mac and using the latest version...

I've always found Calibre temperamental , love it dearly when it works though

what format you convert to is not going to change the amount of time the conversion takes to start. Conversion to MOBI takes longer than to LRF because of the way the MOBI output plugin is written.

I upgraded to the new version and it's still taking ages to start converting anything. It's taking me upwards of five minutes for one file. Is there a setting I can tweak somewhere? The conversion seems to take the normal time once it gets going but it takes forever for Calibre to get it underway.
