well i ll just give you one example that was pointed out the other day in a thread on Engadget i think. a lady does a large amount of embroidery. her particular machine has an sd slot. she can download embroidery patterns to a card and then stick the card in the machine and voila she can sew that pattern. her old pc has died so she is looking for an alternative.

so if she got a tablet that had a slot for sd cards but then didnt use the FAT file system that would be worthless to her because the sewing machine wouldnt recognize the card.

wanna take your card from your camera, put it in the tablet to upload the pcs? sorry you cant the tablet doesnt recognize the file system the camera used.

its why there is a standard. until someone pushes a new standard for new cards that uses an alternative then there will be FAT and there will be a fee to the patent holder.

actually come to think about it thats probably why the slightly higher priced tablets with card slots have rear facing cameras. the cameras themselves are actually only like $5-$8 in production quantities. but having them helps keep up the perceived value so they can keep some margin in the device while still paying the fee

What, these days we still depend on standardization of the SD file system as means of transferring data from one platform to other that it is better to have no SD slot at all than non-standard SD file system?
No, clearly it's better to have an SD card slot - a standard SD card slot. That's why I chose to buy a tablet that had one.

Yes, you can. Go to Google Play, download an "app" and THEN pay Microsoft its dues, and off you go.

Are you suggesting that there is a royalty payment to Microsoft which is separate to the overall royalty payment that's a portion of the cost of every SD card or host adapter?

That's how I understood TomTom vs Microsoft. A one time fee for host adapter is paid by the hardware manufacturer of the device, isn't it?

Microsoft went after TomTom, not after the manufacturer of SD hardware.

I honestly don't know how the licensing of these things is done, I'm afraid.

As far as I am concerned, the issue is way broader and of crucial importance for Google and OSS in general.

ANY attempt to spread FUD claiming that use of Linux is a violation of someone's IP has to be dealt with swiftly:
- either by re-write or re-engineering of the offending code/solution, or
- by clearly separating the offending solution into a separate package that is not part of the core/free codebase.

It is up to Google to shoulder that burden, that's the price of using Linux under the hood. Make Android clean, that's their core business. Ubuntu did it by moving everything to Medibuntu repository, Red Hat had removed questionable codecs long, long time ago.

If Samsung wants to "bundle" FAT file system with their products, that's just fine and dandy, their choice. But Android, out of the box, must be kept CLEAN.

Then what you're asking for is devices with no ability to read external media, because, like it or not, FAT/FAT32 is the "universal" standard for all removable media such as SD cards, USB memory sticks, etc.

Shrug.
I think Google more concerned about Google than 'OSS in general'.
The core Google apps in Android are not open source.

They certainly aren't going to include some sort of half-baked SD card solution that couldn't actually be used for most purposes.

No. I am asking for a choice NOT to pay for FAT, if I don't need it.

It is an extension of very old fight to buy a PC without @#$&# Windows installed on it.

OSS is business these days. Google is attempting to shape the computing world of tomorrow using a large chunk of OSS code in the process. Apple too.

What Google is doing by not cleaning that Android mess is creating (yet another) proprietary jail. They just don't dirty their hands in the process, they use Microsoft as their own bully, since the Redmond boys don't have anything to lose in PR department.

No GameStop just announced it will be carrying the Nexus 7.

This is huge and will be the catalyst, in my opinion that will accelerate the Android tablet.

It has always been my belief that games is what gave Microsoft the win over Mac and any other competing OS. It is was also the reason why iOS is doing so well.

The Nexus is going to be an excellent gaming device at $200 it's going to be only slightly more expensive than other hand held gaming devices with less features.

Plus one key ingredient is GameStop has announced that they will be opening up their own Android Game store and customer can use their trade-ins to purchase these games. That means GameStop has a vested interest in the success of Android.

It's hard to deny the power of brick and mortar stores, they are the very reason why Android phones took off, and the very reason why BB and Windows phone have not

No. It has USB-OTG support, therefore it must have the capability of reading the dreaded FAT file system.
