downloading from library?

Was thinking of purchasing but want to be sure I can use with library downloads. Mobipocket, Adobe are the formats & protected. Think you for your help.

It can work fine with Mobipocket. I doubt it will with Adobe (unless only protected by a password)

I believe so, yes. Unlike the Sony Reader, the iLiad has an on-screen virtual keyboard to enter text.

adobe?

why not adobe? I thought mobipocket would be the hard won to get. Doesn't the iliad have adobe reader installed. If that's the case I can't spend $700.00 on this, as Adobe has a lot more books offered from the library.

There are different types of DRM you'll find with PDF files. Some use a simple password protection - the iLiad will handle those. Other, more complex types of PDF DRM it won't handle.

It will handle DRM-protected MobiPocket files.

PDF is a very poor choice for eBooks - almost anything else is preferable.

True, but it can get very expensive buying the books instead of downloading from library.
Not to mention convincing my wife to let me buy this & then she finds out I now have to buy the books. She will not be happy! How about the new cybook3? Thanks for your help.

The CyBook supports MobiPocket; it will not support DRM-protected PDF.

There are 10s of thousands of out-of-copyright books which can be obtained free of charge from sites such as Project Gutenberg.

If you only want to read books, the iLiad is probably not the right model for you. The iLiad has a higher price because it has a pen-sensitive screen, wifi, etc. Something less expensive that supports Mobipocket is probably your best bet. As far as I know, you'll need a full version of Adobe reader to read protected PDFs, and since they don't adjust to fit the size of the screen, you'll probably need to read them on a desktop or laptop.

You can probably test a PDF from your library to find out what kind of encryption it's using. Does anyone else have a non-Adobe reader to suggest that would be able to run on a PC (or Mac, etc.) that would offer the same level of support as the iLiad for password-protected files, but not the other DRM forms?

evince on linux opens password protected PDFs. I doubt it would have DRM capabilities (but I don't know for sure).

I don't have any direct experience with library e-books, but everything I have seen on the subject indicates that you will not be able to read "library" PDF's on the iLiad. These are Adobe e-books, which require just the right kind of Adobe software to read.

You should be able to read the library MobiPocket e-books, but only after you register the device and only for future library e-book downloads. Assuming these work the same way as standard MobiPocket DRM, the ID's of allowed devices is encoded in the file. You should ask your library how they handle new MobiPocket devices. In this regard the iLiad is no different from (say) a new Palm Pilot with MobiPocket Reader software. If you normally connect to the library using MobiPocket's Windows Reader, the process of adding the iLiad might be completely automatic.

Note that the Bookeen Cybook is cheaper and also supports MobiPocket.

The iLiad does not support the DRM PDFs that only work on a certain computer. Neither does any other eink device on the market as of now.

But the iLiad can handle password protected PDFs.

If you just want to read mobipocket files, and dont need WiFi, the stylus or the larger screen, i would go for the CyBook. If your a BBeB fan, then it must be the SONY.

Having said that, the larger screen of the iLiad is VERY nice indeed. It's just a question of whether or not it's worth the extra cost over the Gen3 or Sony.
