To make it more confusing, there are a small number of Kindle [format] books which are available on the iPad but not the Kindle [device], which might also throw the numbers off.

I think n Kindle every item on Home counts as a book, Collections, Archive, My Clippings, Letters from amazon, guides, everything. Are you considering those?
