has anyone gotten their return yet?
how long did it take? I was not expecting one last year (my accountant pleasantly surprised me), so have no comparison there

We got ours in about three weeks, but we filed before they started reviewing them so that added a week. We filed electronically and from the time our return was "accepted" it took about a week and a half. I think we filed on the 7th or 8th but it didn't get accepted until 14 Feb though because the tax law changes were finalized late this year.
Filing now, if you do it electronically, I would expect your return in just a couple of weeks. |

I filed electronically for the first time a few weeks ago, maybe three, and I received my refund I think nine days later.

My tax preparer (okay, my Ex, who does mine for free -- otherwise I would never pay a preparer) got it in electronically by a Wednesday night (when their name brand franchise gets read, or something) and the refund was direct deposited in my account Friday 10 days later. So my refund arrived on my birthday last week. VERY nice birthday present!

Direct deposit refunds generally arrive a week or so faster than mailed refunds.

I also know that they issue them on Fridays so, depending on your bank, you should get them Friday or Monday. We got ours on a Friday!

I did ours in January. E-filed the 1040A on a Sunday, got it direct deposited that Friday.

Um, that would presuppose I've already filed my taxes, right?

I was really impressed that the money made it into the bank in less than a week, though. |

Probably a silly question, but why do Americans get tax refunds? Why not just pay the right amount of tax to start with, like we do in the UK?

We have to apply for a refund this month, and always pay too much taxes, of course. Mostly we get about a third of a months pay refunded. That's nice.

How do you know before in the UK what is the right amount? We pay a certain sum each month that corresponds exactly to the income and when the year is over we have to make a tax declaration where we can claim for refunds (for paying for a house, for having additional expenses related to working, for other tax reductions...). So in practice we give our government a credit. |
